I just wanted to share my Finacee's BlackPowder hunt with everyone. We had finally walked to the destination where for the last 4 weeks we have seen lots of Elk; Upon our arrival the animals had already moved to private ground (we have permission to hunt it now ), and we just sat there and waited for any possible stragglers. I being the conmsumate hunter ( chest puffing ) decided to break out the old cow call and see if I could lure something into firing range. At this point in time, Linda asked me real quite like to hush...Not to refrain from the cow call, but from the more "non-natural" noises. I not sure of what she was talking about, shrugged off the "hush" and continued with my cow calling. Linda again told me to hush, after an elbow into the ribs. I gave her a look of "what the hell are you talking about"..and she replied that she had never heard an Elk "wheeze and grunt like a pig". Well, if you haven't guessed it, about 35 yards behind us with its' nose in the air was a sow Black Bear and 2 cubs. I being the consumate hunter ( chest not so puffy ) have never seen one in the wild, and have hunted most if not all of Colorado for 20 years. We both stood up and she grunted twice and ran off...I couldn't believe how fast she was..and those cubs were right behind her. In fact they were so close, that if mamma would have stopped those cubs would have run over the top of her. Anyway it was really auwsome to see a bear in the wild that close, or to just see the bear. 1298.2 | emergency room visit on opener | ODIXIE::RHARRIS | Bowhunters never hold back! | Mon Sep 20 1993 10:14 | 29 |
Sounds like your start was better than mine. I got to my stand at 6:15 am, and my buddy Johnny walked off to his stand. He got lost and went in a big loop. He walked by my stand at 6:30. At about 10:00, he was still hunting by my stand. He sat down and had a smoke some 25 yards from my stand. I whistled at him. He looked right at me, and then moved on. At about 11:30, the horn on my truck was blowing. So I pulled out, only to find out I had to take him to the emergency room. He couldn't even walk on his left leg. It appears that he had sprained his ankle severly, and torn his achilles. Way to go, opening day going to the hospital. FWIW, he never even saw me when he was 25 yds from my stand. I guess I do get pretty cammoed out. That "Permanone" repellent works great. I hunted the swamp, and didn't get one single bug bite. Last year I was covered up on opening day. Weather was beautiful, mid 60's, with a slight southeasterly breeze. My stand was positioned so I was hunting a northwesterly direction. No site or sound of deer this trip, but Saturday is just around the corner. Will shoot the bow somemore this week, just to keep on top of it. Hope everyone else is doing well. So much for a previous note about not hunting accidents this year. At least I didn't have to use my dragging rope on him. Good huntin, Bob |
