Ya, but you boys down sowth sort of just wonder out in some field,
sit yourself down and wait for a deer or 25 to come walking by, then
you pick your shot and take him home, only to come back the next day.
The rest of the country have to actually work for it :-)
lots and lots of :-)

All, I just got off the phone with Mass F&G and a press release will be
going out either today or tomorrow announcing that this years season
will be extended to 12 days!
Now if they only changed the law on rifled slug barrels.
Good Hunting,
Guy

| I'll second the motion on rifled slug barrels. It's always been a pet
peeve of mine. Can anyone shed some light on why they don't want us
using rifled barrels. Are they afraid we might hit what were aiming
at!!!

I think the law is in place due to the belief (correct or incorrect
I don't know) that rifled slug barrels will give you more distance,
thus reducing the safety of using slugs and making it more like
rifles.
I know they are more accurate, but do they make the slug go noticably
further?

| No, they don't go any further, they just go straighter. The (il)logic being
used here is that rifled barrels will give hunters more confidence and lead
to longer shots. The truth of the matter is that the people who are going
to take long are already taking them; their slugs just aren't traveling as
straight.

Hunting in both Mass and New Hampshire both for the past 4 years I
look at the laws of both states and compare.
NH can use any type of "single" shot muzzleloader, Mass can only use
"hammer style" and use of sabots or scopes is illegal. Sabots were
explained to me as 2 projectiles, Wad & Bullet, to me that sounds
the same as shooting a round ball. And the use of Scopes or Inline
(enclosed) priming systems are not PRIMITIVE which the season is
listed as. How does a Compound bow pass vs. a Long or Recurve bow.
NH allows the use rifled barrels on shotguns. When I talked with the
law enforcement folks in Mass their reasoning was that a few
manufacturers make Over & Unders with a Rifle on top and Shotgun on the
bottom. Their feelings are the "SLOB" would use the rifle first and
follow up with the shotgun. IMHO this possible situation could be
stopped by the law reading firearms to be use are measured in Gauge
ONLY and have no conjunction with the use of Rifle/Pistol calibered
ammuntion.
NH allows the use of release aids for Archery, this years Mass was
supposed to also allow it. In the past the definition of release aid
was associated to crossbows.
Don't get the wrong idea i'm not bad mouthing Mass they do have an
excellent F&G program. But, I wish that abutting states would review
each others laws and the wording of the them to have some consistency.
I think "WE" need an easier way to get our concerns across to folks
in all F&G departments to have them look at exsisting laws in
comparison to reasonable technology available to todays sportsman.

1289.10 | southern hunting not so easy, sorry for the rathole | ODIXIE::RHARRIS | Bowhunters never hold back! | Fri Sep 03 1993 16:56 | 25 |
| In reference to reply .4, your assumption towards southern hunting is
completely incorrect.
When we spoke with Jackie Bushman of Buckmasters last year, he clearly
stated that out of all the places he has hunted, "You boys down here
in the south really have to hunt hard and smart to harvest an animal."
Southern hunting is not so easy. Why do you think we have a longer
hunting period?
September 18- October 22 Archery
October 23-December 6, December 26- Jan 1 firearm northern zone
October 23-January 9 southern zone firearm.
Sure, that's alot of time. However, with over 500,000 deer hunters
in the state of Georgia, the deer herd continues to climb slightly
each year.
In summary, come on down south for a hunt before you base decisions
on how "easy" we have it down here. This is a friendly invitation,
not a sharp reply, come on down, your the next non resident hunter on
"The buck stops here!"
Bob 15 days until bow season.

Bob (.10)
Sorry if I ruffled any feathers, it was meant sarcastically.
I have been down south, sort of, to North Carolina, for 3 days of
hunting. Had a great time, ended up with 2 deer. I did however
see more deer those 3 days than I have seen in NH in the last 7
years of hunting up here. Up here if you see a couple over the
month you can hunt, you did good. Last year I saw 3, one doe
(can't shoot her), and two flags (one turned out to be a buck,
the other ????)
Didn't seriously mean you guys don't work for it down there, there
is simply no way to outsmart and get Mr Whitetail, consistently,
without putting in your time and work.
Again, no offense intended, there ain't none of it that is easy.
