| I picked up a road kill a week ago last Saturday... It ran thru the
passenger side window of a pick-up truck about a quarter mile from the
house... The police had to finish her off.... We did a quick gut job
and off to the butcher she went. Ended up getting 60 pounds of meat off
her. Can't complain about the price.. I had asked the police what they
where going to do with it and they said "dig a hole and bury it" I just
could'nt let her go to waste like that, besides the only damage was to
the head... I have a question for everyone, This doe was definately
nursing a fawn, she looked like a bitch after a litter of pups if you
know what I mean.. What do you think happened to the fawn after mommy
got hit, the police looked around a little bit for it but could'nt find
it. Do you guy's think it would get adopted by another doe???? I hope
this was the case. What is everyone elses opinion on this??????? Also
anyone else ever pick-up a road kill... She's tastes great!!!!!!!

ORANGE - Hunters and animal rights activists squared off this week in a
hearing before the Fisheries and Wildlife Board over a proposal to
lengthen the deer hunting season in Massachiusetts.
About 50 people atteneded a public hearing on a recommendation to extend
the shotgun deer hunting season by three days begining next year.
Some Highlights...
...herd is estimated at 60,000 and growing about 1% annually
...the proportion of the deer harvest taken by hunters during the
shotgun season has dropped from 81 to 70 percent in the last
six to seven years.
..."The shotgun season is our most consise means of control...Our
control is being reduced as the shotgun percentage is being reduced".
...Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket would not be included.
...Opponents said the proposal in unnecessary, the herd should be allowed
to be controlled naturally, overpopulation is because of manipulation
by man.
...But Vecellio (state deer project leader) said the herd "only controls
itself when it crashes due to starvation...and that is a ludicrous
method to control any wildlife population that has been impacted by
man".
The board will vote on the proposal at the August 26th meeting.

| Wess,
I live in Colorado Springs and do the majority of my dove and
upland bird hunting in Kansas. There are a group of us that head for
the border most every Sept. 1st for the last ten years or so. We camp
at a reservoir in Colorado about ten miles from Kansas. It's a multi
purpose trip: We get to do some pre season scouting for pheasants, run
our bird dogs, catch a few fish and last but not least shoot 30 doves
a day( 15 in Kansas and 15 in Colorado). I CANT WAIT T-18 DAYS!!!!!!

| Went down to deer land #2, Monticello Georgia, this past Saturday
afternoon just to check things out.
This was the property they did a select cut of timber on last spring.
Well, it looks like deer haven BIG TIME! It is so thick, it's
incredible. There must have been some big storms down there this year.
A big pine tree was uprooted at deer camp, leveling the shelter. A
large pine tree was blocking the main dirt road, so I broke out the ole
tow chain and cleared the road. Dropped off a couple of mineral salt
blocks by main trailheads, along with 600 lbs of corn. There is plenty
of browse, so the corn is meaningless, but what the heck.
As to not disturb the area, I got out of there as fast as I got in.
Red, I told Earl about this Saturday when I got back, you would not
believe the swamp. With all the growth, you can't even see the road
where it crosses the swamp. I drove by where I thought the road was.
It looks so prime. I can't wait. Also, some real nice looking deer
tracks. Do to it being prime time snake season, I chose not to go
romping around the area. I know exactly where I am going to hunt.

| Guys,
Man, I can tell everyone is on edge waiting for opening day, myself
included!
I was out scouting on Saturday, It looks like the coyotes are thicker
than ever. I found several sets of little bitty deer tracks walking
along side the "doe" , with coyote tracks right behind.
My brother did some fencing which is now funneling the deer right
through an area that was covered with scrapes last year...it might be
promising.
Squirrel season is Saturday, I guess I'll feed the mosquitoes if I
don't have to work...probably do more deer scouting than hunting,
although the 22mag needs to be shot.
I did see 4 does on the way to work this morning. They were all fairly
decent size, no fawns in sight.

| I just bought my hunting license this year. Hunting license, big game
tags, and archery stamp were a total of $27.00.
Big game tags = 3 antlerless
2 antlered
Gun or bow, it doesn't matter.

| Ky hunting license is $12.50, and tags are $17.00 which allows for 2
deer, one of which has to be a slickhead. They are good for
bow/muzzle/gun/crossbow/big stick/etc.
If I get lucky enough to tag a nice buck with my bow, I will save the
doe for my .50cal flintlock, it sure is fun!

| Seeing as how this topic doesn't seem to be about anything in particular,
I figure I might as well put this in. Check my personal name if you
want to get a clue as to what I'm talking about.
I've been sitting through a hunter's education (they don't call it
hunter safety anymore) course with my 9 year old son. And, the
topic of anti-hunters and animal activists has been discussed. As
many of you well know, there's some of those folks that are just
down right fanatical, even to the point where they want all animals
treated as humans and oppose any use/exploitation of any animals
by humans.
So, it only seems reasonable that some of the people care for dogs,
cats and other carnivores. Being conscientious about their responsiblities
to these animals and such, they should be well aware that they should
feed these animals meat. How do they get the meat to feed the animals
without exploiting or using other animals? At the very least this should
pose an incredible moral deleimma for some. It also make hypocrites
out of them.
Just food for thought (and maybe ammo for your next encounter).

My opinion is anti's do not have morals, only emotions. If they had
morals they wouldn't believe as they do.
Animal lovers (in more than one sense) probably feed their pets
roadkilled hunters

| While sitting at the 20 acre pond across from my house (inaccessible
except when frozen or with waders), over the course of 45 minutes, I
counted 108 black/mallards taking off, 8 teal, 2 egrets, 2 herons and 3
beavers.
It was a blast sitting directly beneath the flight bath of the overhead
flights.
At about 6:00, I returned with a fishing rod and jitter-bug, only to
see the same display in reverse.

| 12ga is useful only with 00buck. With smaller shot size, the armor-
plated scales deflect them. I prefer my .308 because when you stick the
barrel under water, the sights are still east yo pick up and the
smaller barrel doesnt spook them. They get real mean when wounded 8*)..

In note 1276.6 I related information from
a Boston Globe article about how the Mass
Fisheries & Wildlife Board conducted a hearing
to explore lengthening the 1994 shotgun season
to control the heard.
The vote on the extended season was taken
last Thursday, August 26th.

I was told by an attendee (representing a Mass
Sportsmans Group) that the vote was
7 to 0 in favor of the extended season...but
wait it gets better...the extended season WILL
ALSO APPLY TO THIS YEAR!!!
This would mean that the 1993 season (slated
to end on Wednesday, December 8th) will
continue to Saturday, December 11th.
Stay tuned...I called Westboro Headquarters and
they confirmed the outcome of the vote; a press
release should be out this week.

Boy am I jealous, we in NH have to wait for Oct 1 to break out the
hunting stuff (except archery). Even oct 1 is no piece of cake,
ever try to woodcock and/or grouse hunt with the leaves still
on the trees? Talk about "fun"!

| Last year I was swatting mosquitoes while in my stand for the first few
weeks of NH bow...Ever try staying still while those bloodsuckers are
after you? First year in 20 years hunting that I have seen mosquitoes

| I know exactly what you mean about mosquitos. Thats why I stay out of
the woods until just the beginning of October. There are always those
last few mosquitos that just don't seem to realize that fall and winter
is on the way, some of them just don't know when to fly south. ;^)

| Now it has come time for me to quit my summer ramblings, and start my
deer season. It is five minutes to five. I will be on my stand in
thirteen hours. Welcome new deer season. Today has been a helluva
day. The weekend is here. The season is here. Looking forward to
spend six hours on a plywood seat on my ladder stand, in the woods.
Looking for a good buck, or a lonely doe, with my arrow nocked.
No does with fawns, no scraggly racks. Bringing the camcorder to,
just incase. Everyone have a wonderful weekend, I know I will.
