1273.0. "Hawks, falcons or owls???" by UTROP1::BOSMAN_P () Mon Jun 14 1993 11:01

It's three years since the last falconry entry so maybe it's time for a
    restart!

Anybody in here active with any raptor in any way? Be it hawk, owl or
falcon, be it falconer, austringer, breeder, rehaber or just
    enthousiast!

I am not a falconer but I do admire the birds of prey for there beauty
and their talent in the air. I have seen them in the wild bagging
there prey. They are so patient and odservant. Are there any Falconry
clubs in New England where you can go and watch people practice this
sport. I know I just don't have hte time to be a participant but I
would love to be an observer.

    Paul,

They sure are wonderfull creatures, rightfully at the top of the food
    chain.
About New England I wouldn't know since I live in the Netherlands and
"Old" England is were I get my experience from.
In august I'll go over to England again to do a week's hunting rabbit,
hare and duck with a "cast" of falcons, hawks and an Eagle Owl. Save
for a lot of time it dear in other aspects as well but more than worth
    this!
As there are about 1500 licensed falconers in the States I guess you
should be able to find one. Try calling the national hunting office,
ask them for the adress of the national falconry organisation and
    follow the lead from there.

    Good luck,

    Peter

When I was in college, a friend of mine had two hawks and a couple
of ferrets. We use to take them to a park in Portland ME to fly them.
I would keep one of the ferrets in the pocket of my hunting jacket
while my buddy worked the bird. It was cool to watch the bird chase a
squirrel through the tree tops. I'd say our success rate was less then
20%. We used the ferret to drive rabbits and squirrels out of stone
walls and holes in the ground. One time the ferret killed a rabbit in
the ground and the ferret refused to come out. My friend finally got
    him a day later.
