1272.0. "vermont" by FRSBEE::BBOHANEK () Thu May 27 1993 09:30

I have gone thru all of the notes unde rthe keyword of Vermont and
still have a few unanswered questions, maybe some of the locals or
    veteran hunters can help answer.

I am looking at hunting Vermont for the first time due to the increase
in NY licences and the tremendous amout of posted land in Maine. Maine
was nice but the access was lousy in the Harmony area, went to Jackman
last year and was totaly dissapointed. It looked like a nuclear bomb
had hit the place the way it had been logged so heavily. The place was
desolate. We saw a whopping 6 deer get weighed in,(of course they were
    202 208 210 220 236 237).

    My Questions are...

Does anyone know of lodges, guest houses, motels, etc..in the vicinity of
Gaisville (sp?) ? Preferably with some type of leased land with minimal
hunting pressure although not a requirement.

How heavely is the land posted in VT?

Does State land see a lot of hunting pressure ?

Is there truth to the rumor of increasing herd size? Or was that wiped
    out due to last winter?

I have a friend who hunted this area for 8-10 years stopping about 11
years ago due to decreased deer herds and we are trying to decide if
this is where we want to go.

Fra, Bob Mercier says you are an expert on Vermont so i hope you can
    shed some light.

1272.2I love Vermont...AKRONU::LAFOSSETHE FRA, 226-5328Tue Jun 01 1993 17:1125
been hunting there for over 15 years... My first year there I saw several
dozen deer... nothing legal long enough to draw a bead on... ;^( lots of
does, and a couple of dandy bucks while posting prior to bow season. There
were a few years after that where you were lucky to see a few deer during the
entire season... but rest assured the herds back in good shape, numbers are
up and the weights are getting better too... The racks seem to be a little
better too, but that may mean i'm getting better myself and seeing better
bucks... ;^) I'm not sure what kind of effect the winter had on the deer
this year... i'm not getting too excited though, the snow was pretty deep
when i went up in late march to tap trees with the farmer.

I don't know where Gaisville?? is so I have no comment on what the facilities
or the hunting area/pressure is like. A lot of people have left the state due
to the heavy posting of land, but any hunter worth his salt can scout up a
couple of nice areas to hunt... they are out there, you just need to do your
homework. And if you asked, i'm sure people would let you hunt posted land,
seems owners just want to know who's out there and when...

In general, the number of non residents was down in the last few years, so
the pressure isn't too bad... and with 3 deer tags to fill last year it's
a bargain for under $100...

looking forward to October!!

I'm planning a scouting trip to northern Vermont soon. I hunt
mainly small game: grouse, rabbits and timber doodles. Can anyone
recommend any towns in the northern area that would be a good
    place to start? thanks.......
