1268.0. "odorless bug repellent" by ODIXIE::RHARRIS (I NEED A VACATION!!!) Fri May 07 1993 08:55

Mr. moderator, please move this to a file if you can find one that
this would associate with, I could not find one.

I want to talk about ODORLESS ways of bug repellant. With hunting,
you want to be as scent free as possible, especially with bowhunting.

Every year, I get ate up big time with bugs during bow season.
Chiggers, mosquitos, you name it. I refuse to use things like Repel,
or skin so soft, because of smell. Opening day of bow season last
year, I received over 60 chigger bites on my left hand alone. Already,
now, I am getting bug bites on my legs, even wearing long pants.

Someone has told me about Brewers yeast. He said that I should take a
tablet a day, and I will not be bothered by bugs. It sounds good, and
I would like some input from my fellow hunters, for your opinions on
Brewers yeast, and any other Scent Free insect repellant. The bugs
are real bad down here in the south, especially when you are already
    hitting the 90 degree weather.

I would like to look forward to opening day of bow season, and if I
cannot find a solution for bug repellant, it's just not worth it.

    Let the ideas flow.

Bob 140 days until bow season.

I tought brewers yeast worked because it gave your body a little
    extra "odor".

Eat a lot of garlic. It usually works well but then again a little odor
comes with it's use. A friend of mine used to eat pickled garlic cloves
    and he never got bit.

A crazy shop aholic once gave me an electronic bug chaser that worked off
a 9 volt battery and hung from your belt. It work *if* you had someone
else nearby without one. A remarkable product. Just supply bait and
    you'll be left alone. 8)

A couple of years ago I bought a product called permenone (sp) to keep ticks
off me. This stuff doesn't smell and it kills the bugs that land on you.

You have to spray your clothes with it BEFORE you put them on. I've had bugs
land on me and then fall off. Maybe that's why I'm losing my hair!

I bought a jar of Brewers yeast pills. I am going to start off with
that, and see if it works. If it works, great. If not, back to the
    drawing board.

    Bob,

Hunt from your boat and the chiggers won't get you!

No, but the water moccassins will. Anyway, keep the ideas flowing, as
I don't get off swallowing 10 damn brewers yeast pills a day. 5 in the
    morning, and 5 at night.

If I have to have skin so soft, cutters, and deep woods off, on during
    bow season, I will.

Mainly, I am looking at chiggers and mosquitos. I am told that the
Brewers yeast is good for chiggers and ticks, and that I am SOL on the
    mosquitos.

    Bob,

I guess you could always use a mesh headnet and mesh gloves to keep the
bugs off of you. I have pretty good success with it myself.

A pet bullfrog on your shoulder would also do the trick.

    Wess,

I had serious problems with the mesh gloves. Opening day of bow
season, I counted 67 chigger bites on my left hand.
