1258.0. "1992 N.H. Bear & Deer Harvest Report" by SALEM::MACGREGOR (RKBA is the 1st and 2nd (BoR) way) Mon Mar 29 1993 15:16

    Well it's that time of year again when this conference has almost
    slowed down to a standstill. I took a ride up to the N.H. Fish and Game
    headquarters last week to get my licenses for this year and also put in
    for the moose hunt lottery. While I was there I picked up the 1992 N.H
    Bear and Deer Harvest Report. If any one would like a copy send me mail
    off-line and I will send it through E-Mail. I haven't finished typing
    it in yet but when I do I'll send it to all that wants it. I'll put the
    summaries in here:

1258.11993 deer kill under 10,000CHRLIE::HUSTONWed Dec 22 1993 14:438

    I heard on the radio this morning that the NH F&G has announced the
    hunter deer kill for 1993, don't recall the exact number but it was
    slightly under 9900, I think something like 9862. They made note that
    it was under 10,000 and they had expected 10,000+.

    	This note struck me funny becouse the state of Missouri complained
    of the same thing. They expected 200,000+ killed and only got 155,000+.
    The timing was perfect becouse the last two mornings have seen two
    deer killed in the morning rushhour traffic in the middle of Kansas
    City.

    	How many other states had a lower then expected harvest? I've
    personnally seen lots of animals since the 9 day rifle season ended.
    Too bad none where within my 40 yard personel limit for the bow.

    By all accounts, the deer population in the mid-west is booming. A
    recent study by the missouri fish and game concluded that the
    conditions where near-perfect for the Whitetail (35% forest,65% grain
    and hay fields). Out of 600 does killed by cars last winter (a very
    small percentage of the total road kill) that the Fish and Game
    disected, over 85% caried twins or better. Thats right, a fair
    percentage carried triplets. Every year, the number of doe tags
    increases. my little county assigned 10,000 last fall alone. With 57
    units averaging 3k to 13k tages, thats a heap of dear.

    	Are the fish and game guys that bad at guessing, or is it just
    that, guessing?

    Just wondering,
