1243.0. "Hunting ethic and the "Mohican way"" by GLDOA::ROGERS () Thu Jan 14 1993 10:50

For those who saw the "Last of the Mohican's": Wasn't the opening
scene just great? For me it represented what hunting was all about. I
had not hunted from 1978 to 1991 and was successful on the 2nd day of
that first season. When I came upon the downed and dead deer, I felt
some powerful emotions all mixed together (pride, shame, grief, wonder,
accomplishment) that were hard to deal with.

The "Mohican way" was perfect. It represents getting in touch with why
you are there. My hunting ethic is still forming (after all this time)
and I believe that this scene was a tremendous help.

No way I could tell it and not diminish it. Go see the movie. I know
it was just a movie, but someone "UNDERSTOOD" when they wrote that
    scene.

Could be it was in the original (1932) film, but I never saw that one.
This takes place in upstate NY in 1757. Total wilderness. The scenery
is great as is the story line. My wife said it was the best she has
    seen.

I'll set the stage, but you must see the movie. The last of the
Mohican tribe is father and son with an adopted whiteman as a second
son. They are hunting whitetail in upstate new york. The methodology
seems to be to run up trail (for miles) until the quarry, in this case
a huge buck still in velvet (no seasons in 1757) is closed on. Then
still hunting to get in range ( of a flintlock of course)

The buck spooks and runs. Nathanial (Hawkeye) swings the flintlock to
follow and takes the buck as it leaps a stream. It drops where hit.
Father and both sons approach with reverence. The father has a few
words to say to his sons and the magnificent buck. NOW see the movie.

The rest is very good as well.

This is a fantastic movie a must see. Everything looks very authentic
and realalistic and it keeps you glued to the screen the entire movie.
Good luck to everyone in the coming seasons. This is my last day at
digital and i will miss this notes file.

I have not seen the movie, but will when its released for video tape.
It may be now just haven't been to the store for a while.

Its kinda funny, the way you describe the scene. Specifically the
running part because of a spoof I saw on the comedy show "In Living
Color". If you remember the advertisements for the movie they showed
the hero (I presume Hawkeye) doing a lot of running. Well the spoof was
just that, a guy in deerskins running, and running and running. It was
kinda funny, guess you had to be there! :^)

Anyway, I have often felt a strong feeling of envy towards our Native
Americans. Especially the woodland tribes. Before we came along and
ruined things for them. They lived tough lives, but respected the
important things in life, and even worshiped them. If hunters, check
that, if everyone had just a hint of their respect for the land and
animals the world would be a much better place.

As Sachem, leader of the Huron (allied with the French), says near the
end, "The coming of the whiteman brings the darkness of night to the
future of the Huron. We do not know what to do." They could not
decide as people. They split up and some submitted and some went to
war. In the end they all lost. Lesson in this perhaps?

I too thought that this was an excellent movie. Can't really understand
    why it is rated R.
I agree that the opening scene was one of the most memorable in the
entire picture. The Mohican father (played by Russell Means) asks the deer's
forgiveness as he (the deer) dies and pays tribute to his strength, speed,
    endurance and courage.

     A definite "must see" !!

The reason it was rated R is because of the violance, and the graphics.
