1237.0. "1992 Blackpowder on Fort Devens" by DELNI::HYDE () Tue Dec 29 1992 14:20

    I'm interested in how your hunting went during blackpowder season on
    Fort Devens this year.

    I hunted the full three days all in area 8. Never saw one but knew they
    were around us. We would work the piece in the morning with no fresh
    sign and do the same thing 2 hours later and they had been in there.
    Most of shooting was coming from area 7, very hard hunting, swampy.

    Last year, I saw more deer in 3 days than I have in the past 7 years
    total outside of Devens.

    Oh well, let here it.

1237.1BP on Devens was good for usNODEX::ESIELIONISTue Dec 29 1992 15:0322
    Fred,

    	My family had pretty good luck this year during the BP season on
    Fort Devens. My dad shot a 115 lb. doe, and I got a 130 lb. doe. Both
    of my brothers got shots, but didn't take deer. We were in area 9 the
    first day (not by design - we normally hunt 7 - but we got there late
    and that was the only area left that could accomodate all of us). Both
    my dad and I took our deer on the first day. I was only able to hunt
    the first day (I'd shot a buck during shotgun season), but I saw alot
    of deer in the morning. In fact, I jumped three deer into area 8 when
    I got up after shooting my doe - I started walking over to it, looked
    up, and saw the deer running. Never knew they were there, or how long
    they had been there.

    My dad and brothers hunted area 7 on the second day, and they all
    saw/shot at deer.

    From what I hear, they took 31 deer during the BP season on Devens. 18
    the first day, 9 the second, and 4 the last. I'm not sure that those
    figures are 100% accurate, and I don't know the area by area breakdown.

    Hi John,

    I'm glad you did well this year. Congratulations are in order for your
    first deer. Its a good feeling. I also heard the figure of 31 deer out
    of Devens too.

1237.3Thanks!NODEX::ESIELIONISTue Dec 29 1992 16:489
    Hi Fred,

    	Thanks for the congratulations. That first one was a long time
    coming - seems like it took forever! But you're right - it's a really
    good feeling. And to have gotten two deer this year (a spike during
    shotgun, and the doe during BP), well, I may not stop smiling 'til
    next season!

1237.4how do you get permission????MSBCS::MCNULTYThu Dec 31 1992 12:2510
    Can someone tell me how you go about getting permission to hunt at Fort
    Devens??? I'm mosting interested in BP and bow hunting... Seeing I just
    moved to Lunenburg, Fort Devens would be ideal for hunting and
    scouting.. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated....

                                                   thanks in advance.

1237.5Call the range controlNODEX::ESIELIONISThu Dec 31 1992 13:1315
    Hi Mike,

    	Your best bet would be to call the range control office. I don't
    have the number handy, but perhaps someone else in here does. I'll try
    to get it over the weekend, and post it on Monday if nobody else does
    so beforehand. They'll tell you everything you need to know.

    	One thing you should know - you have to have proof that you
    completed a hunter safety course in order to hunt Fort Devens. Also,
    they are not always open for every season. This year they weren't open
    for shotgun, but they were open for BP. I've been told that all of
    that is dependant upon if they need to use the hunting areas for
    drills.
