I'll be going to PA. this weekend for the tail end of buck season and
the first day of doe season. Since the weathermen are predicting a
large snow storm for the weekend, I thought that this would be a good
place to discuss technigues for hunting whitetails during storms and
right after. So what if anything do you folks do differently durring
or right after a big storm?

Jeff,
I too am leaving for Pa., I dont know where you are going to be at in
Pa. but if you are going to be up in the mountains I would set for the
first 5 hours on monday then get on a ridge and walk very slowely
across the top where you have good visibility down over the hill.
I talked to my step dad this morning, the buck season has been very
poor this year, although he got a 5 point the first day (good thing mom
was there cause he didnt even know it was a buck) she has the eye sight
of a hawk! she saw turkeys 300 yards away in archery season and pointed
them out to me before I ever saw them.
But anyways, there are probably going to be more guys than ussual
out there on monday morning so the deer will be pushed around some. as
far as hunting them during a storm if there arent alot of people out in
the woods then you can generally walk up deer, or cut a fresh track
during a snowfall and get on it and follow it till you come face to
face with your quary.
My findings with storms are the period of time 8-10 hours prior to
the start of the storm the animals in the woods become very active,
during the storm they are very apt to be setting tight, I have walked
within 20 feet of bedded doe during buck season and they wont even get
up. a deer does not want to move when the wind is blowing hard or if it
is snowing hard or raining hard, because of the fact that their senses
are impaired greatly. so the best way to see em is to walk or put on
silent drives.
hope this helps, and good luck in Pa.

Lee,
We'll be hunting around Couldersport. A friend raises cattle
up there and has around 2700 acres. He said the same thing as
your Dad did about buck season. With eight people hunting opening day
they didn't kill a deer. The saw between them around 250 does!
His Mom saw 42 from her stand alone. This will be my first time
hunting PA with a rifle. We'll be hunting Dave's land exclusively
so there shouldn't be alot of guys on top of us. We'll have six
hunters for the 2700 acres. The area around us though should get
hammered with guys. Good luck to you and be careful.

Head for the thickest, nastiest, swampiest, evergreen growth and you'll
find deer during a wind or snow storm.
At least that's been my experience.

jeff,
My mom just called, sha said ya better bring your snow shoes, they
have 20 + inches of snow and its still snowing there in Pa. I think
that there is going to be a massive deer kill during doe season. they
say that the mountains are in worse shape for snow so be carefull on
the drive down there.
I awoke to a nice fresh snowfall of 1.5 feet. so I spent an hour
shoveling this morning. I am outa here tommorrow morning for Pa.
