1225.1 | A 1 Shot Kill | NWD002::MURPHYRO | | Tue Dec 01 1992 12:47 | 10 |
| Had the article sent to me by a friend. The bear was shot minutes after
the season opened ( 3 day season) at a distance of 30yds with a Marlin
30-30. The bear was apparantly killed with 1 shot. Hard to believe!
The hunter had never hunted the area, was with 2 others. They thought
they had to leave the internals in place until having the check station
look at the kill. This approach presented problems moving the bear.
They finally gutted it and then rolled it 80 yds to the truck using
logs as rollers. From the picture, the feet/pad looked to be 12"
across. The skull will be measured in 60 days for entrance in the
record book, should it be a record.

| A recent issue of 'North American Hunter' had an article on a
black bear skull from Alaska which looks to be the new world
record. It was shot several years ago. Remember, skull size is
not directly proportional to body weight. However, 850 pounds
is one *HUGE* (deleted) bear no matter how big the skull measures!

| I was reading my new issue of Georgia outdoor news last night, and
the new state record Black bear, 525 lbs respectively, was harvested
by a Ford 4 x 4 at 45 mph.

when I was down home in N.E. Pa over the Thanksgiving week Holiday, I
saw the picture of the bear in the local paper. It was huge and filled
the truck bed. The location of kill was not far from residental areas BTW.
