In N.H. anyone under 16 may hunt the way you suggest however, he's
17 and needs a LIC. but before he can buy a lic he needs to complete
the NRA Safty training.
I would do yourself a favor and get him into the course before you
take him for deer.
If you do take him for deer without a lic both of you may get fined.
Even if one is tagging along with-out a gun and is of age could be
written up. Example, say you get a deer and he helps you drag out,
say you were duck hunting and he helps you load, unload the boat, row
set up decoys he would be cited for assisting the hunt.....
May sound petty but it's the law.
Do yourself a favor, get him through the course and start him hunting
upland game and waterfowl....then see how he does then go for Deer.
just my opinion.

al,
What state are you hunting? Game laws vary from state to state, so
what might be legal in one state won't fly in another.
If it were me, there's no way in *()* that I would do this. I would let
him tag along, but not handle a gun if he didn't have a license. It just
doesn't make sense to me to take that chance.
The other thing I'd do is call the State wildlife office and ask them.
I would be real surprised if they told you it was ok.
Jerry
P.S. I second the suggestion to get him enrolled in a hunter safety
course.

This would take place in mass...but I tend to agree with the other
replies that I'd be best not to take him along..I told him last year
to enrole in the hunter safety course but I know he didn't do it..
don't think he knew how to make the contact and he didn't ask me about
it and I never gave it another thought. I'll have to tell him the
reasons why he won't be able to come and will tell him again to enrole
in the safety course.
thanks again!

I took my brother deer hunting with me last year to satisfy his
curiosity about hunting. He was nothing more than a spectator. Upon
leaving the area I was stopped by the local wildlife authority. He asked
us for licences. We explained that my brother was only a spectator and
as such had no licence. He then promptly searched the truck.
He said that had he found two guns instead of one we would have been
in violation of hunting without a licence.
Glad I didn't bring the rabbit gun with me that day :-)

As re.2 stated check with state law first. Each state has their own
rules and also if your a resident or not they may be different. Mass
does not require a previous license so he could buy one. But no matter
what as my brother stated (re.1) and re.2 he should go to a Hunter
Safety Course no matter which route you decide to travel with him.

| Never shooting a gun before, I don't care what the state law was, I
would not let him hunt. I would let him go as a spectator, and I would
hunt. Not until he passed a hunter safety course, and was EXPERIENCED
with a firearm, only then would I let him hunt. I am not saying he
doesn't know how to handle a gun, but for safety reasons, don't hunt
until you know how to handle and shoot the firearm your hunting with.
