1204.0. "Trap or Skeet Info Anyone???" by RDVAX::FAUST_CLANCY (mod ent eats/file=octave::eats) Thu Oct 01 1992 18:55

I used to shoot clay pigeons with my father "a few years ago" ahem! quite a
few.... Have shot skeet on cruise ships in the past and usually am the only
woman. Easy to walk away with a trophy if you're the only challenger. But
I have bested a number of the gentlemen shooters...not bragging, just fact.
Even more difficult when you consider that I'm blind in my left eye, and have
corrected vision to 20 in my right. (I've always wondered what it would be
like to have vision in both eyes...)

I've tried to find a local (I live in Ayer) place for clay pigeon shooting.
There's nothing in the yellow pages and after a quick peruse of the EASYNOTES
all I found was this hunting conference. I found a reference to a hunting
preserve in New Ipswich, called Skat but would prefer a closer location.

Any leads to a location or hunting club that offers this would be appreciated.

Seek and ye shall find, I guess. Here is info on the Riverside Gun Club,
the Leominster SportsPERSON Asociation and the N. Leominster Rod & Gun.
All info was taken over the phone - haven't been there in person -- yet!

WOW! Thanks for the great info and speedy responses. I guess skeet shooters
are friendly types.

Bear, I called Linda Saisi (now Stinson) and she enthusiastically
agrees that you would be a great person to hook up with as an instructor.
She asked me to say hello to you.... I invited her to note here on her league
experience. She also mentioned "firearms" as a possible conference for info.

Walt, Thanks for your generous offer to a round of trap at Nashoba in Acton!
A friend who works at AKO tells me that remnant shooting sometimes strays
there. True?

1204.8Mini-Trip Report - Nashoba Rod & Gun - Sunday, October 4, 1992RDVAX::FAUST_CLANCY"In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash!"Wed Oct 07 1992 17:5033
This is a mini-trip report as I actually did not get to shoot on that Sunday.
(bummer) but I found myself welcomed to the club and being given a tour of
the grounds by Bill Taylor. Bill has been a member for quite some time and
lives in Ayer, he introduced me to his father and several other guys plus one
woman member that was there that morning--Barbara. Barbara and I are about the
same height so I'm interested in trying out her gun for size and fit. She's
been a member for eleven years. She tried to be a member BEFORE THAT TIME,
BUT WASN'T ADMITTED. Seems she was a WOMAN. YUCK :^)

I asked for you Walt but they told me you said you were going GOLFING! I
noticed your name on the list of Past Presidents.

I had a huge breakfast with two other members, Stu (who confessed to being the
club Scapegoat!) and Kermit, who were eager to discuss the mysteries of a
Remington 1100 (no longer manufactured) and a similar Reminginton (I forget the
model) semi-automatic that they recommend. Everyone seems to think its a good
idea to try lots of different kinds of guns before committing to a purchase.
And, best of all, everyone seems to be willing to let a newcomer try theirs on
for size. I got an application form and picked up a copy of the by-laws and am
ready to go back for a longer visit with more observation of shooting, now that
I'm comfortable with the club. Their monthly meeting is this Thursday evening
if anyone else wants to go.

Their clubhouse is nice and spacious and has no bar--and the club seems proud
of that. They mentioned that they thought that the "Blank" Club was getting
too social because they had a bar. When they have events such as a game supper,
etc, its BYOB.

Everyone was extremely friendly and nice, and eager to accept women into the
club. Including the two dogs that polished off the rest of my breakfast!!!

I've shot skeet and trap at the Leominster Rod & Gun. Its great !
They've got two skeet and two trap ranges. Very well lit. They
use to have monkey shoots which are great fun. Two people take
positions on the middle spots between the skeet houses. The trap
house is in front of both of you. Fifty pigeons are thrown every
thirty seconds from either the trap house or one of the skeet houses.
You and your partner try to shoot as many as you can. I would shoot
the trap birds and my brother would handle the skeet birds.

1204.10Trap at Northboro F & GMR4DEC::ROCHELEAUTue Nov 10 1992 13:5123

    Northboro Fish & Game
    Bearfoot Rd. - Northboro, MA

...has trap shooting every Sunday morning (1 range), public
welcome. They start around 8:30 and go until 12:00 or 1:00.
They shoot on Thursday nights, too, when it's light out. Sunday's
are fun; they've got a fire in the stove going, you can buy coffee etc.,
and the resident chefs often contribute homemade stew/dinners. (You'll
    find women welcome there).

Northboro is not a big, fancy club, but great people, great atmosphere.
They have a couple trout ponds, rifle range, pistol range, archery
course, outing pavillion -- +cheap membership. The club has been
doing a lot of renovations recently and seems to have a new group of
enthusiastic, active volunteers. (I know, I've become a "widow" since
    my husband joined).

    Cheryl R.

Also, Hamilton Rod & Gun Club in Sturbrige, MA, has both trap &
sporting clays on Sunday mornings. They have 5 trap ranges!
