1194.0. "First NH license - help !!" by REGENT::BENDEL () Wed Sep 09 1992 11:43

I just moved to NH this year. I have previously hunted in MA for
over 10 years, and a couple years in Maine. I understand that to
get a NH license I must either prove that I've had a hunter safety
course, or that I have hunted in some past year (show old license).
Now for my problem. Season is three weeks away for birds, and
in looking for an old license, I found out that they didn't make the
move to NH with me, they went out with the trash. I have all my
duck stamps, state and federal, but I threw out the licenses. The
town keeps no records, send them to the state at the end of the year.
The state keeps the records for two years, and I haven't hunted for
the last few years (since our dog died). Now I have a new dog, anxious
    to go, and am wondering:

Can I get a license without attending hunter safety ? I have no
objection to taking the course, but time is scarce. I wish I
took one of the 8 weeks one night courses, because the weekend
cram courses take all weekend, when my wife works. (But I'll try
to do that if I have to !) Does everyplace check this requirement ?
Any possibilty that they may accept my stamps as proof ?
Do they require an actual number from an old license, or is it just
a "show me so I know" requirement ?

    				thanks

It is a show me state. Anyone can buy stamps as some non-hunters do to
add to their collections. You must either have proof of hunter safety
or a previous license. In the N.H. Sunday news in the sports section
their is a list of hunter safety courses. If you have ever hunted
before in N.H. you can get proof at the Fish and Game HQ's in Concord.
But it should be after a certain year, there was a fire (can't remember
when) that destroyed alot of records.

Concord still had my records (I took hunter safety in 1977).
1194.3Can't remember when the fire wasSALEM::MACGREGORThu Sep 10 1992 09:257
I believe the fire was in the mid to late 70's. Can't remember. But a
friend of got his records there so I really don't know. I remember the
old building that was situated right next to rte. 93. The newer
building is pretty nice. Has a couple of small exhibits in it.
Including a stuffed Golden Trout that no longer exhist in N.H., it is
also called a Sunapee Trout. I believe the road is Hazen Drive.

There are a couple of places where they think that golden trout still live
in NH, FWIW. (And I'm not tellin' where, until I catch one myself!) :-)

A few years ago we went to Maine for our yearly trip. When we went
to buy our license, (we live in Mass) my brother realized that he
had forgot his previous year's license. In Maine they take a
previous license or a hunter safety certificate.

Needless to say, my brother wanted to hunt that week, and there
was NO WAY we were going back, since we had driven about 3 hours
already. He had to get a lawyer to get the appropriate papers,
some sort of affidavit saying he takes all responsibility and
the state of Maine is not responsible should something happen
while hunting. This only took about an hour to get done (I couldn't
believe it either). This was, If I recall, the first year that
a previous license had to be shown, so the ability to do this
may not still be there, but it's worth a try.

I think it only cost about $20.

1194.6Got one !!REGENT::BENDELMon Sep 14 1992 14:2912
    Well,

After much digging through old stuff, I managed to find one (and
only one !) old Mass hunting license, with my stamps. This was all
that was needed to get a license, so I'm all set for this year. I
should have a more flexible schedule next year, with more free time,
so I'll probably take the hunter safety course before next season,
since I do believe they are worthwhile. Thanks to all who replied.

    			Good hunting
