No solid answer, I would guess that it is a simple matter of math.
If there are lots more muzzleloaders than archers it could add up
to lots more deer being taken.
total guess but who knows.

I'm a N.H. resident and I have been buying the muzzle loader, regular
hunting and an archery license. Now I'm allowed two deer, one with the
archery tag and one with either the rifle/shotgun and muzzle loader
tag. If you want a two deer limit then get into archery :'). I'm not
sure I understand why you see it as a problem. Depending on the amount
of deer available in a certain state is what depicts the limits. There
is quite a difference when hunting with a muzzle loader as opposed to a
bow and arrow. You have been limited to your shot a great deal. 20
yards is the ideal bow range as opposed to anywhere from 20 to 75 yards
with a muzzle loader... I believe that most of the states have the same
regs just different seasons..

1190.3 | you pay for an extra 10 days | SALEM::MACGREGOR | | Fri Sep 04 1992 14:34 | 10 |
| Maybe one more reason is that the states ML season gives you the ten
days just before the start of firearms season. It is therefor an
extended season. All you end up doing is paying for the extra 10 days.
I for one buy an archery tag and don't buy the ML license. If I get a
deer during the ML season with my bow I still get to hunt with rifle.
If I were you I would take up archery. I for one think it's more
challenging. But using a smokepole is more challenging than a rifle or
shotgun for that matter also. .1 is probably more correct than I am.
IMHO.

| In Georgia, you get 5 tags. You can use them for all bow, rifle, or
a mixed combination of both. If you bow hunt, you have to buy an
archery tag. K.I.S.S. Keep it simple stupid! (stupid= state
government).
15 long, agonizing, gut wrenching days until bow season.

| RE .4
If you hunt on a Wildlife Management Area where deer checkout is required,
you do not use a tag on the deer, a special WMA tag is applied by the
Ranger at the checkout station, SO, you can harvest more than 5 deer
in Georgia. Of the 5 tags Bob mentioned, 3 are antlerless only tags so
the most bucks that can be tagged is 2.

| Carl,
Make sure and check WMA regulations prior to hunting. We noticed that
during the Archery hunt on Chestatee WMA, you have to use one of your
own tags, yet firearm hunts on the same WMA, they supply the tags.
Discrimination against bow hunters!!!!

| Dana-
Archery licenses, by virtue of the difficulty associated with bagging a
deer with a bow and arrow, entitle the hunter to harvest a second deer. Archery
season in NH is ~3.5 months long, and yet only ~700 deer are taken (last year's
record, shattering the old record by nearly 300.) Muzzle loader season is only
10 days long, during which ~1600 deer are taken. Obviously muzzle loader
season extracts a far higher toll on the deer population the archery season,
despite the fact that it is much, much shorter.
Muzzle loader season has a built in advantage; it is _before_ the regular
rifle season and hence the deer are not yet so skittish. Thus you are paying for
an added advantage when you buy your muzzle loader license.
The net effect of your proposal would be to significantly increase the
deer harvest. The upshot of that is that the regular firearms season would
have to be shortened, and the number of "any deer" days in each WMU would
likely plummet. I think that is a heavy price to pay for muzzle loader hunters
to take a second deer.
I would definitely oppose such a rule change. Let's continue to rebuild the
herd, instead.

| In Kentucky we pay $17.50 for 2 deer tags. We can take them however we
want, but only 1 may be a buck. Of course if you know someone who is
having deer eat them out of house and home, and has special crop damage
permits, well let's just say I can't wait until Oct.1!!!
If you don't like the laws in that state, hunt a different one with
ones that are to your liking.

I think you must have put too much insect repellent on last time you
went out and it got to you.
Bob oh Bob, did you kill a deer

They smell it on your breath when you sit on the stand
with who knows what in the palm of your hand.
So Bob now I wish you the best of luck
to go out on saturday and kill a HUGE buck.
