1171.0. "BOWHUNTING FOR BEAR INFORMATION?" by WBCKIT::LANIER () Thu Jul 23 1992 10:21

    My husband would like to go bowhunting for bear. He does very well
    bowhunting for deer and he is a target archery shooter. I would like to
    give him a bear hunting trip for either Christmas or his birthday which
    is in March so it would be for the 1993 season I guess. I have looked
    in the bear files but most information is a couple years old so I was
    wondering if you could give me some information. I would like some
    information on bear hunting in Canada, Northeastern States and the
    Western States. Also how much would a trip to Canada cost? Are there
    licenses involved? Are their groups you can go with, etc.

    I would appreciate any information you can give me. We live in Maryland
    by the way.

    Thanks,

    Laura

    Laura,

    		You may want to try looking/asking in the Archery
    	conference also. I don't know the NODE off the top of
    	my hear, but it's there somewhere.

    Laura,

    Check some of the advertisements in the back of magazines like,
    Hunting, Bowhunter etc... That will at least give you an idea or two.

    Also, places like the "North America Hunting Club" puts out a listing
    of places that their members have hunted along with the results.

      P.S. your husband is a lucky guy, my wife is always trying to find
           ways to keep me at home during hunting season.

    Thank you all for the information. I didn't even think about looking in
    his magazines or anything. Thanks also to the people who sent me mail.
    I really appreciate it.

    P.S. I'm pretty lucky too, he doesn't say to much when I'm out in
    the malls! I'll let you know how it turns out.

    re.0 Laura, you mention the west, but some of the best bear-hunting
    is in Maine.

    Also, in some places, they have spring bear-hunting, so you may not
    have to wait 'til fall.
1171.6What about Maine?WBCKIT::LANIERTue Jul 28 1992 09:166
    regarding .5. Okay tell me about Maine. I guess I just assumed out west
    there was lots of woods and lots of bear.

    I appreciate all the mail I have received also.

    re.6 Well, they have several guide services, and hunting is from
    stands over bait, which is how it's usually done. The bears
    aren't usually huge, but they are plentiful.
1171.8Lots of woods up here too.DNEAST::BAKER_CHUCKHuman Input Required...Tue Jul 28 1992 14:186

      We also have lots of woods. And very many guides. If you hire one
    make sure that it's a reputable one.

        you might go to your local library and look into some mags. for
    the area you are interested in. Just a couple, COLORADO OUTDOORS,
    ALASKA, CANADIAN WILDERNESS (I think), BOWHUNTERS and BOWHUNTING WORLD
    which you will find a section in the back that covers just about any-
    where. Good luck in your search.
