1162.0. "Deer update." by MCIS5::PAPPALARDO (A Pure Hunter) Wed May 27 1992 16:03

How's everyone doing these days? Still employed? Things are starting
    to heat-up around here.

Anyway, been out spot-lighting deer at night here in South-East N.H.,
It's legal untill Oct,1st, seen a total of 14 deer in two nights out,
seeing more after 11pm than before. The deer look Great, good condition
due to an easy winter. They are more reddish now than gray like in
November however, more spooky than I figured, the 1 million candle
powered light is something to be seen...yet the deer don't just stand
and gaze, they look-up and bolt...one went across a huge open field
on the jump for about 150 yds...all bolt to just inside the woodline
then stop and stare, all you see is their eyeballs, Their still a
    pleasure to watch.

Also been hearing from lots of folks and their all saying the same
thing, lots of deer being seen everywhere.....looks like the 92 season
    could be a banner year.

Well got to run. anyone else seeing any indications of a heavy deer
    population????

    See Ya!

Went target shooting Monday morning, there was a nice looking doe
standing right by the club entrance. (I _hate_ it when they do that)

Have seen a few others, all of them looked very healthy. Is it
    October yet?

I was in NY over the long weekend turkey hunting. We went out one
night around 9:30 spotlighting. We were out about 45 minutes and
counted 48 deer. All looked real healthy. Good luck to all.

I saw a pair of does yesterday morning at about 6:40 at the onramp from DW
highway south onto Rt 3 south across from the pheasant lane mall. Nice looking,
and like Rick said, they had a much more tawny coat than the grey-brown of
winter.

I see an occasional deer cross a road, out in the country, but haven't
been much tromping in the woods yet. Time to break out the bow and
dust it off, replace the string, and start practicing. Gosh, only
121 days until bow season opens. That really isn't that far off, with
gardening, golf, fishing, and oh yeh, wife.

BTW, I remember back on note 933. or so, I spoke about getting hitched
and all you guys said how it was going to hurt my hunting. Well, get
this. Since being married, new truck, she's going to let me revamp
all my cammo, I get to go 3 weekends a month during hunting season, and
that other weekend, is a day trip. Not bad if you ask me. when it
comes to having kids though, you can bet I will plan on February birth.
Good luck. It's time to start looking at mags, sharpening broadheads
    and dream.

Also buying a video camera for the woods and dear camp.

1162.5Saw one 3 weeks oldKAHALA::NELSONShorthairsThu May 28 1992 13:419

My vet has a 3 week old (his guess) fawn in one
of his cages. The deer was hit by a car. He did orthopedic
surgery to repair a rear leg.

My kids got a big kick out of seeing a deer so young
    right up close.

I wonder of the chances of that fawn surviving in the wild without it's
mother. Perhaps they'll donate it to a petting zoo.

I've seen 3 good size deer in a field about 1/4 mile from the ocean in
North Hampton nearly every day for about a month. We have 2 running
through our yard occasionally even though I have a dog. I saw them
while walking her a couple of nights ago.

The best story is of the pregnant doe that was rescued from the surf in
Hampton last week. Seems the deer crossed 1A and was spooked by
traffic (it was midday). The deer climbed some rocks off-shore and
naturally drew a crowd of onlookers. The crowd inadvertently scared
the doe off the rocks and it started to swim out into deep water when
the police came and cordoned off 1A. After things quieted down, the
doe came ashore and crossed 1A and ran back into the woods.

    Mark.

Upper Penninsula: Michigan, April 24th. Took my two boys up to scout
some new turf. Also to find my buck grunt that fell out of pocket into
the snow last November. From 4pm on Friday to 9pm on Saturday, we
counted 119 deer including the nine we jumped in their beds during th
middle of the day. I even got about ten on video (quick on the draw).

In one area of SW Iron county, we found serious rubs everywhere and in
in a couple of hours, four antlers from three different deer.

Found the call too. Great weekend.

1162.10only 113 more daysODIXIE::RHARRISUltralight foreverFri Jun 05 1992 11:0513
Coming into work this morning, I was driving down kimball bridge road,
and just before the road crosses the creek, there was a nice, good
sized deer about 10 yds into the woods. It was real easy to spot, as
its hair was a reddish tint. I could not determine if it had a rack or
not, as I was going about 75 in a 45. (late for work). I am going out
tommorrow to my new deer land to scout. 750 acres of prime land in
a county that has been producing some real nice sized deer. Hopefully
I will have input on Monday. Gosh, only 113 more days until bow
    season.

Stopped by my 91 "kill zone" and put up a tree stand last week. Just
curiosity. About 9pm (sundown is 9:35pm) along comes a familty unit,
three does, two little ones. Went back three days later and 8:55, here
they are again. Was a little careless on the walk in and the lead doe
crossed my path. Loud snort and all head east (back to me). They hank
around for 15 min and then go back across my path. Guess the old dame
figured that I was long gone. Actually I was within 25 yards of her.
She is immortalized on my CamCorder as is the little one who stood five
yards away while I whispered to him.

It was funny to watch him look around for that voice without ever
looking up. It is amazing how red the coats are this time of year.
My son spotted a buck in velvet about 300yds east. That fits the six
pointer I saw last year. Brad says he is eight points this year. I
have yet to get a good time/site synch on him like the does. October
    first is 64 days away.
