    	here, here, Its about time. Just in time for Hunting season
    too. I hope that all you people out there that own bird dogs
    haven't been neglecting poor fido. Its time to get him out and
    start putting on him on a program to get him in shape for bird season

    Later this month we can put him into a few pigions and steady him
    up a bit so that he remembers whats expected of him because it's
    probably been months since you had the poor sod outdoors.

    I for one love bird hunting. If you have any questions feel
    free to ask just about anything except where are your favorite
    bird coverts because I ain't got any but if you want to tell
    me some of yours please wait until I get my pencil.

    So Please fill up this notes file real fast Thankyou, Bear

    Oh Yea,
      You guys are real smart starting a note on hunting. As if I don't
    waste enough time on the fishing and firearms notes. I'll hunt
    just about anything thats legal. Birds, ducks geese, deer, got
    a)moose once. So lets hear it from all you guys that like to get
    out in the woods. My favorite (right now) is bird huntin with the
    dogs.

    My guess:

     When you write a reply and finish it, after you atrt to add your
    note it says something about writing your note. If, during the time
    your note is actually being written, somebody comes across it, the
    body of the note isn't at the receiving node yet. Just my guess.

    Thanks to Bear Gath for pointing me to this notes file!!! BTW I
    check the easynotes listing fairly often and had not seen Hunting
    listed. Is there a problem in that the personel section of easynotes
    is not up to date? I know lots of others who would add this conference
    if they knew about it & I can't imagine all I don't know who would
    like to get in. Any ideas how to rectify this??

1.11How to get into the easynotes listingLILAC::MKPROJREAGAN::ZOREMon Oct 24 1988 11:4910
In order for a notes file to be included in the easynotes.lis it has to be
announced in the easynotes notes conference. Usually it is the moderator
who does this. The easynotes conference is located on...

TLE::EASYNET_CONFERENCES

I believe that each new notes file is announced as a separate note (using
the WRITE command).

    I kind of agree with Mr. Moderator. At various times in the past
    I have been involved in "discussions" with anti's in CANINE and
    SOAPBOX. It's kind of nice to have a file that I can retreat to.
      Then again this might be a good forum for enlightening the masses.

    I'm with Jeff and Mr. Mod. Although it would serve a useful purpose
    by notifying other hunters about the existence of the file, I feel
    it would just be a pointer for anti's to access this note, and litter
    it with knee-jerk, liberal, anti-hunting, save gay unborn baby whales
    on welfare, greenpeace types.

    Yeah, I know, "what do you *really* think, Mark?" :^)

1.15Put it in!LILAC::MKPROJREAGAN::ZOREWed Oct 26 1988 16:0816
I would tend to agree with you guys except for one thing. The firearms
notes file has been in EASYNOTES for as long as I can remember and has
never had a problem with some antis getting in and screwing it up. I would
think that THAT notes file would have more detracters than the hunting
notes file would.

I think that most people tend to respect the wishes of the moderator of a
given file. They all know (and are reminded occasionally by moderators)
that the stretegic debates for/against the basic premise of an activity
belong in soapbox and not in a file dedicated to the activity in question.

'Course this doesn't say anything about tactical debates. Heck disallowing
those would take most of the fun out of it! :-)

1.17Are we ashamed of hunting?SMURF::PUSHEEThu Oct 27 1988 09:4914
    I do not agree with the "low profile" approach. I think that one
    of the reasons that there are so many antis (or at least misinformed
    neutrals) is that hunters hide too much. I am not ashamed to be
    a hunter - are you? If you are not ashamed of it, then why must
    you hide? Because so many of us are closet hunters, the population
    at large gets the impression that there are really very few hunters
    (and most of what they see is the slobs).

    I am not suggesting that any one should go about flaunting the fact
    that he is a hunter, or that we should all wear camo to work, but
    please lets not be afraid to be what we are.

1.18Ashamed? Far from it!BPOV04::J_AMBERSONThu Oct 27 1988 10:1512
    Dave,
      It's not that I am ashamed of being a hunter, far from it. In
    the other files that I participate in I seldom pass up an opurtunity
    to defend hunting and sportsmen in general. What I enjoy about
    this file is that I can sit back and relax. I don't have to defend
    hunting here. This file is a place that we all can talk about
    hunting without having to justify it. Take a look at SOAPBOX or
    even CANINE if you want to see how rabid the anti crowd can get.
    I like having a file where, at least for awhile, I don't have to
    listen a bunch of idiots screaming "Bambi Killer".

     There is a way that you can prevent problems with antis (I think).
    I've seen some conferences that have "membership" requirements.
    I don't know how it works, but it might be worth looking into.

     Not posting "Hunting" in easynotes because some antis might find
    it presupposes that there are a significant number of antis with
    nothing better to do than to find places to make trouble. If this
    should happen and some jerk comes around causing trouble, I think
    we have the right to "banish" them from the conference under the
    harassment policy. You could always put "No antis welcome" in note
    1.

     It was very difficult for me to find this conference. Had I not
    found this conference, I probably would not have gotten my license
    this year (first time in 8 years) and I probably wouldn't have left
    at noon the last two days :-) The only reason I found this conference
    was because someone "advertised" in one of the other conferences
    I frequent (must've been either soapbox or fishing). I guess another
    reason I got my license this year is due to the fact I've been arguing
    with a beanhead in soapbox, some liberal, veggie munching activist
    pest by the name of John Mitchell. If I get a pheasant this year,
    I may send him a feather :=) Just kidding.

    I agree with the "let's keep it out" crowd. I am not afraid nor
    do I hide the fact that I am a hunter (at least an attempt is made),
    but it really is nice not to read the anti's point of view in a
    conference aimed at making us all better sportsman and hunters.
    I would tend to think that if there was a hunter (past or present)
    working within my org. our paths would eventually cross and I would
    tell him/her about this and other hunting/sporting conferences.

    I have to add my 2 cents worth. Sorry.

    I am the editor of EASYNOTES.LIS and have been for over three
    years so I have a fair idea about what happens when conferences
    are announced there. I am very very surprised that hunting is
    not announced. I'm even more surprised that there is a debate
    about it. It seems like such a good idea to announce it.

    You really think that hunting is going to attract more 'bashers'
    then the conferences listed above? Seriously?

    If you make a policy that bashing hunting is not allowed and
    enforce it you wil have no problem. Zero. None. The FIREARMS
    conferences proves that to me. So do the conferences listed
    above.

    On the other hand there are large numbers of hunters who will never
    hear about this conference by word of mouth. Do you have any idea
    of home many Noters there are in small offices in all parts of the
    world?

    Yes and no. Although the moderator can state that the file is
    pro-hunting, and can certainly delete any notes that flame or
    harasses, you can't stop people from expressing their dissenting opinion
    in a calm and rational manner.
    	Linda
1.26TSE::LEFEBVREThe buck drops hereThu Nov 03 1988 14:167
    Linda, I don't think anyone's asking that dissenting opinions be
    censored. However, a clear explanation of conference guidelines
    will set the tone for the content of discussions in HUNTING.NOTE.

    Maybe I'm being naive.

    Mark.
1.27LIONEL::SAISIThu Nov 03 1988 14:196
    Mark,
      Yeh, but the file wouldn't have as "homey" a feeling. However
    it worked in FIREARMS. Maybe because hunters and gun owners
    are so used to defending these activities that we have our arguments
    ready.  :-)
    	Linda
1.28BPOV04::J_AMBERSONThu Nov 03 1988 14:356
    One way to avoid the flames, would be for everyone just to ignore
    any anti-hunting comments. Then the moderator could send a message
    off line to that individual explaining the policy. If they don't
    have an audience, they can't flame.

    I also will change my vote from nay to yea. After giving it some
    thought we owe it to ourselves to defend our sport with anyone that
    has a rational argument or question. I think that is the key, if
    the anti is curteous in his comment we should be courteous in our
    reply. i like Jeff's idea if they turn on flames, just ignore them.

    Just my opinion.

1.30BOMBE::BONINThu Nov 03 1988 15:5224
         Many of us have complained that this conference suffers from
         a lack of participation, especially during the off-season.
         Certainly, announcing this conference in the
         EASYNET_CONFERENCES conference and adding it to EASYNOTES.LIS
         will bring more contributors. Best of all, it will bring us
         hunters from around the country and around the world. This
         conference will be more interesting and fun.

         And when you think about it, we're not being fair to the
         hunters who don't know about us. Suppose you just discovered
         this conference. Here it is a year old with 272 notes.
         Wouldn't you feel frustrated that you'd missed out for the
         last year? Wouldn't you ask, "Why didn't someone tell me?"

         Sure, there's some chance that the more radical and
         disrespectful antis--the kind that would scatter human hair
         around your deer stand or drop cow dung in your duck
         blind--will come here and attack hunting. However, rather
         than ignore antihunting flames as previously suggested, I
         think the moderator should delete them as soon as they
         appear.

    How about archiving this one and starting a new one from scratch (other

    that everyone know where we stand. I would also suggest, setting up

    I feel that hunting should be listed in EASYNOTES.LIS. I am an avid
    sportsman and hunter. It took me a long time to find the hunting

    wouldn't be reading it.

1.33My Ideas. What do you think??CASV05::MCNULTYFri Nov 04 1988 08:5533
    some points of interest:

    1. the hunting notes file was listed in both the fishing and archery
    files.

    2. you say state the rules, I have numerous times ex: for sale items
    go here, look thru the notes and see how many times new notes have
    been made for stuff for sale, trade, or ads!!!!! We can"t even follow
    the rules our selves, do you think the anti's will????

    3. Delete any note that flames or harasses. Like I stated before
    I don;t have the moderator privelages I should have to do this type
    of stuff. Reason being is when we set up this conferance my user
    name was MMCNULTY then they changed it to just MCNULTY and I lost
    my privelages.

    4. Just ignore them. Do you really think we (the hunters) could
    really just sit read the stuff they'll say and not defend our sport???

    5. Lets archive this one. My game plan exactly. I talk to the person
    who helped me get this conferance about my privelages and she could'nt
    help me , she recommended we start a new file with the right user
    name. I am planning on doing this in the spring time when this note
    slows down a bit. It would cause to much confusion to do this right
    in the middlle of the hunting season. Does that sound like a good
    idea.

    Sometimes, it's a good idea to start fresh, especially if you're going

    My vote is to list it, but not archive it...I agree with re .37,
    once archived newcomers will be bringing old topics...and we'll
    be constantly sending them there...and even though the information isn't
    really gone, realisticly in everyday sense it is. Let's keep all
    topics from day 1 in the active note. There is an awful lot of
    good information in our older notes, when I have a question about
    an old topic I will enter a reply in that old note, and with "next

    Ok, ok, I can take a hint. I certainly don't want to be martyred. :-)

    I still stand with the archive idea only because of past experience as
    a moderator. There's no law that says you can't extract and copy stuff
    from the old to the new. And, this wouldn't mean we can't revisit old
    stuff in the new file. From a moderator's perspective, it gives you (a
    moderator) a chance to learn from your mistakes/oversights and to
    develop a more-clean, better-organized, therefore easier to use (for
    everyone) notebook.  That's all.

    I guess I'm just a non-conformist... :-)

1.41Problem with UNSEEN map?TSE::LEFEBVRENothing personalFri Dec 02 1988 08:348
    Has anyone else had problems with having 2000+ UNSEEN NOTES displayed
    when exiting this conference (even after there are *no* new notes
    unseen)?

    I can fix the problem by getting back in and doing a SET SEEN/BEF=now,
    but this is the third time this week that this has happened to me.

    I'm having the same problem. What's going on???
1.43Pretty Please?TSE::LEFEBVRELook at Mother Nature on the runThu Dec 08 1988 10:2114
    Is there a moderator in the house?

    Everyday I have to reset my UNSEEN map. I know, I know...this isn't
    a big problem. However I read notes from a batch file that extracts
    all the unseen notes and mails them to me. Sort of like having
    the newspaper delivered to my doorstep every morning. 8^)

    2000+ unseen notes are tough to wade through to find the ones that
    I haven't read yet.

    I respectfully ask the Moderator to look into this problem, seeing
    that there are others who are experiencing the same thing.

    Y'know, in looking around the directory of this notefile, it seems like
    there are plenty of duplicate notes that could easily be condensed. I
    was wondering if any of the moderators had any plans to condense these
    duplicates at some point in time.

1.50lets keep it togetherWFOV12::DRUMMWed Dec 12 1990 11:3212
    	So that I don't disturb the flow of other notes I write this here.
    Let's try to keep notes flowing in the original base note direction.
    Of late there has been a lot of mixing subjects up in notes. Not to
    flame anyone but the "Mass hunter victim" note turned into a handgun
    hunting story note. If you see an entry from a noter you want to talk
    to start a new note an talk. This way the base note subject will be
    well served.

    	Thank you for your support

    Actually, to follow up on what your saying, I was thinking it might be
    a good time for a moderator to peruse this file and do a little house
    cleaning (ie. moving multiple base notes on the same topic to one
    place, breaking out new base notes, etc.) In fact, i think I suggested
    something like that about a month ago, but no one responded.

    When I did a "show mod", I found that I didn't recognize any of the
    names which leads me to wonder if any of the mods reads this file????

    Starting this Monday your new moderator will be Chuck Baker.
    He will be takeing over for me as I am not a hunter and the origional
    moderator left DEC and dropped this file in my lap. I appoligize
    for letting this file go so long without a moderator.
      Charlie is new at this and would like any help you can give him.

    	Thankyou for your understanding..

1.54GOOD YEAR OUT HERE!MULEY::KOOSERToo little time. Too many hobbies.Tue Jan 12 1993 13:0730

Days spent scouting:

	2 for antelope and

	1 for deer.

Days spent hunting:

	6 hours for antelope and

	1 hour for deer (actually 1 hour hiking and 15 minutes hunting).

Animals harvested:

	1 nice antelope buck (202.53) and

	and a fork-horn (270.?) mulie buck.

All on public land.

Hopefully I'll draw next year for muzzle loading elk and eastern plains
whitetail.
