1147.0. "WHO COOKS FOR YOU" by SLUGER::CAPPUCCI () Tue Mar 03 1992 11:37

With Spring Turkey Season right around the corner I wanted to start
this note for conversation on hunting gobblers as a forum to vent
my anxiety for the upcoming season. To get things going I'd like
to throw out a question. This is directed more towards the
un-successful gobbler hunter than the successful one. Let me explain.
Does anyone out there have any expiriences shooting at big toms
with a smaller gauge shotgun? Is a ten or twelve really necessary
to knock down a big tom or would a sixteen do the trick. The only
turkey I ever shot at was a medium size hen at about 25 yards and
I took it down with a sixteen. I've yet to shoot at a tom but this
May 4th I hope to. Are there any hunters who have shot at big toms
with 16 or even 20's. What were the results...., Is range the only
issue. With all I've read about the toughness of these big birds
I was kinda surprised cleaning that hen last fall that the feather
density was not that great, not nearly as dense, for example as
Canada Geese. I do have a 12 gauge, but I'm more comfortable with
my 16 Browning and I'm stubborn...........

This note is in responce to using smaller gauge shot guns on turkeys.
I shot my first tom in the spring of 1990. The shot gun used was a 20ga
fox b savage double. The amo used was a 3inch number 6. The aprox
range of the kill was 20 yrds. I shot the tom in the head and he was
killed instantly. I think it is important that you obtain the tightest
pattern you can with any shot gun you are going to use. Head and neck
shots should be taken at the closest range possible especially if your
going to use these smaller gauge guns. I also think that using a magnum
load with lots of pellts like the 3inch six will increase your odds in
hiting the tom in the head or neck. I would not personally shoot beyond
25yrds with smaller gauge guns nor would I attempt any kind of body
    shot.
