| Bret,
while you may be able to cut down your "time to market" by getting
other peoples load data, thats not to say it'll shoot the same in an
identical rifle. It'll merely give you a starting point, and save a
little time and money by choosing the better powder for your
cartrige/bullet combo.
My neighbor is getting excellent results with 4064 in his Weatherby
30-06... i'll see what i can come up with tonight...
havn't heard of anything about balistic tip results yet... as far as
accuracy... i'm not getting any outa my .270 using em...
thats not to say you won't... receiving end results on big game???
havn't heard anything good or bad. Too soon to tell? Someone in this
file must be hunting with em, hopefully you'll get some info

I shot some 140 gr ballistic tips out of my 7mmREM MAG. To say the
least the results were amazing. I shot at a gallon jug of water and
said "Holy Crap" (you know what I mean) 3 times before the last piece
of plastic hit the ground. I think they would cause lots of meat
damage. Just my opinion.

I shot a box of 165 gr. Ballistic tips from my .308 Weatherby
bolt that a friend loaded. I was cutting bullets at 100 yds with
them from a bench! But, I've also been doing pretty much the same
with plain old factory 165 spbt Federal Premiums... Maybe it's the
gun..? In any event, they performed well on the accuracy end, can't
vouch for the results in game tho -

Ref .3 your right, the balistic tips may be an over kill, not that
their not effective, quite the opposite, their an over kill for deer
huning. down at the local fantasy shop we got into a discussion about
Nosler Balistic Tips, and the previous comment about sums it up.
Apparently all the bullets manufactured regardless of any features, BT,
PT etc., do not really have any effect or become critical until after
'X' number of yards. 'X' would be dependant on the caliber and load of
the firearm being used. Up to 100 yards for a 30-06 any ole bullet
(full load) is accurate, this is my understanding.

1004.6 | a starting point is what we are looking for | SALEM::MACGREGOR | | Wed Aug 07 1991 09:34 | 11 |
| re .2 Yes Fra thats what I was looking for, a starting point. I more or
less know what I want, it's my friend thats needs HIS starting point. I
had a 30/06 but in need of money it forced a sale (with the intention
that I could buy it back) so now all I have is my 300. I am going to
slow the velocity down a bit, for both bear and deer. One person that
my friend talked to said they didn't expand too well, would go right
through what one was shooting at. I suppose it depends on shot
placement and that would be for just about any bullet. It's all a
matter ones own opinion I guess. I am going to give the Ballistic Tips
a shot (no pun intended) and see what happens.

1004.7 | BT = Rapid Expansion | FELICE::keith | Keith Dilsworth | Wed Aug 07 1991 11:01 | 10 |
| I read somplace in this file that the Nosler Balistic Tips expand rapidly at
lower velocities. This winter I bought a TC Contender and read a lot of
articles on the verious calibers and loads. One of them said that the BTs
performed very well at the Contender velocities due to their expansion
characteristics. They might tend to be a little to radid expanding for a
300 WinMag.
I am using the 150gr BTs in my 309JDJ Contender.

1004.8 | Yuck. Too much $ for no return | DECWET::HELSEL | Legitimate sporting purpose | Wed Aug 07 1991 12:53 | 18 |
| I have never had any luck with Nosler anythings out of my .300
weatherby or my other sweet shooter, an H&K .308 Not only aren't
they accurate (for me) but they tear the heck out of the meat. I
always get them all over the paper at the range.
I don't know what everybody else shoots, but I'm kind of a velocity
fan.
For accuracy and a nice hitting bullet, I prefer Sierra Game King BTs.
I've had great luck with them. Nice sharp accuracy, minimal damage and
quick death.
Last year I found that Speer BTs work in a pinch.

| I've got a .270 that I will be using when I hunt this year (in rifle country)
in NH. Since the shots are rarely beyond 100 yards, I am assuming that the
bullet will retain significant velocity when it impacts the deer. Given
the fact that I want to minimize meat damage, does anybody have any opinions
on which factory ammo would be best to accomplish this? Right now I have 130
grain ammo from both Remington and Federal. Should I go to 150 grain to get
the lower velocity? Any particular brand?

1004.10 | Federal Hi-Power 150's | SALEM::MACGREGOR | | Thu Aug 08 1991 09:25 | 7 |
| In my opinion Federal makes the best factory ammo on the market today.
I had used Federal Hi-Power and Premiums and was very happy with both.
I ended up using more of the Hi-Power because it was cheaper and seemed
to be just as accurate to me as the Premium. I myself have never owned
a .270 but have fired them on occasion. I would opt for the 150's but
then again this is just my opinion.

1004.11 | still looking for a load for 30/06 | SALEM::MACGREGOR | | Thu Aug 08 1991 09:33 | 5 |
| Does anyone have a reload for a BAR? I haven't read a thing here yet on
my second question. Is there any load for a 30/06 in 165 gr. Boattails
that we should consider for a starting point. I will decrease powder
and work up to a good load. Thanks in advance.

1004.12 | RE: .11 | BTOVT::MCGINNIS | | Mon Aug 12 1991 10:19 | 12 |
| As I believe it was stated earlier you can buy Federal Premium
boattails in 165 gr. I used to shoot 165 gr. in reloads for my 30-06
long before factory loads were available. I did this because I could
never decide between 150 or 180 gr. so the 165 gr. seemed like a good
compromise. I've now switched to a Remington model 7 in 308 because
I've gotten lazy in my middle years and decided a lighter gun was best
for me. I still shoot 165 gr. as they are also available in factory
loads for the 308. By the way, I find that the new factory loads are
just as accurate as the reloads I used to shoot. One more thing that
I've found is that you don't lose much hitting power when you go from
30-06 to 308. The only thing you lose is alot of excess weight to
carry around.
