996.0. "DEER SANCTUARY IN MERRY OLD...." by MEMORY::GAZZANIGA () Mon Jul 29 1991 09:13

Heard on the news last night that Paul McCartney et al...bought up
80 acres of land in England (formarly a huntable area)...and turned
it over to a group that is against what they call cruel sport(ing)..
This area is being made into a deer sanctuary...If that catches on
it could really put a crimp into the ability of legitimate hunters
    to practice their sport.

What do you think about this?

Well if the area surrounding the 'sanctuary' is huntable, I know were
    I'd set up and wait.

The Antis are really starting to enmass upon us, its showing up all
over. This is a definite indication of things to come.

Curious, who owned the land that was purchased? Was it private or
    public?

Well LS....didn't hear who had owned it, but; McCartney paid somewhere
in the vacinity of $180,000 for the land.

Let's form a group to ban rock-concerts. I hear from the drinking,
drugs, and other risks involved of attending these events we could
    probably save some lives.

Maybe Ted Nugent will buy the adjacent land :-)

rather late, but the "hunting" in question is stag hunting, in which
mounted "hunters" follow a pack of dogs which brings the stag to bay and
then kills it.

We are not talking about the sort of hunting normally practiced in the US.

Incidentally, even if MacCartney turns the land into a "deer preserve", the
British Government define the permissable deer population on any piece of land,
and the owners are compelled - by law - to cull the herd to this number.

Most owners who do not themselves hunt sell off the permits for this work, which
is a fairly cheap way of getting a days deer hunting in Britain.

I somehow suspect that Paul and Linda will be unlikely to sell off the
permits, though I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they have to brief the
tracker to do the work for them!
