995.0. "NEW YORK DEER HUNTING INFO." by SHARE::LEE () Sat Jul 27 1991 20:08

I am interested in deer hunting in New York this year. Does anyone
out there have a number that I can call to get information on the
different zones and regulations for the state. I am going out by the
salmon river area off lake ontairo. Any information would be
great,ie-fish and game headquarters phone number.

                                                       Thanks,
                                                       Bob

You should contact the DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation)
in Albany @ 518-474-2121. They will mail you an information package
and liscence application. Every thing can be done through the mail.
Once you're on their system, they will send you a computerized renewal
application next year. I think you'll find then very easy to work with,
but like anywhere else the fees are steep. I seem to recall the big
game liscence I purchased two years ago ran $82.50 for a non-resident.

You might also want to consider applying for a doe permit, and should
ask for an application when you call. The timing gets tricky though.
You will need to recieve your basic liscence first then mail the doe
permit application by a September deadline (9/15?). Permits are issued
on a lottery basis based on the quota set for the Dear Management Unit
you will be hunting, with a certain percentage set aside for
non-residents. If you don't get one this year, you will recieve a point
certificate to be used next year. The more points you accumulate, the
better your chances of getting a permit.

    Good Luck,
