| I don't know what the laws are in Colorado, but if you haven't already
taken a hunter safety course, I'd recommend that be your first step.
If you had one in the past, but over 4 years ago, a refresher wouldn't
hurt. Call your local fish and game department for info.
Next, spend some time scouting areas with a seasoned hunter who can
give advice in the field. The conditions won't all be the same, but
you'll at least get a feel for it.
Watch some decent videos on field dressing and carcass care. An elk
would provide a LOT of spoiled meat.
Know your prey's kill zones and practice, practice, practice with your
firearm. Dispatch your animal with as little pain as possible, as
quickly as possible.
Get in shape for the long drag out.
And that's only the tip of the iceberg, as you'll learn.
Good luck,
Bob

| .03,
I plan on going to enjoy the Elk and the outdoors. I was joking
about getting a 8 pt bull or 7 pt bull. I'll take anything legal.
I'm just taking amy information on hunting to make me more success-
ful. I picked up Elk and Elk Hunting by Hart Wixom last night.
I should get a little more background on hunting Elk after finishing
the book.
.02,
Thanks Jeff.
Thanks,
Will

| Hunter's safety and proof is mandatory to purchase a hunting license
in Colorado. Blaze orange (500 sq in body, 100 sq in head) is required.
I've been hunting colorado big game for about ten years now. The average
hunter bags an elk once in five years. I've yet to bag one, although I've
come close (minute late). Bull elk grow antlers, year 1; none (calf),
2 ; spike, 3; three or four points, 4+ years; 5...usually max of 6 points,
7 is very rare, never heard of an 8 point. Not counting the "eye guard"
most muley bucks max out at 4 points although I've seen a couple extremely
nice five points (one at CXO). Non resident elk is about $250, deer about
$170 (steep), resident elk is $33 and deer $23 or somethin' like that.
I've harvested plenty of does, a nice buck (my first deer), and an
antelope. I also do plenty of small game hunting, with my yellow labs.
You'll love hunting Colorado, if there is anything I can do in the way
of answering questions, etc let me know.
chuck
(ps we count one side of anters only unless unsymetrical then call
them a 4 X 3 etc..)
