982.0. "LEGAL AGE FOR CHILD" by SCARGO::GALPIN () Thu Jul 11 1991 16:47

I did a dir/keyword=child but came up empty, so here is my
question. What is the legal age that a child can begin hunting? Both
with a gun and just going along with his father prior to obtaining a
    gun.

Depends on the state and the game you're hunting. For example, in
Texas there is no minimum age limit for any game (at least there
wasn't. It may have changed). In Colorado, you must be 14 to
hunt big game (deer, elk, etc.). However, I don't believe that there
is a minimum age for small game. Also, a lot of states now require
that you have a hunter safety card unless you are of a certain age.

In Mass., I don't believe there is a minimum age for just
accompanying you in the field.... Its your judgement call.

The Abstracts state that, At fifteen years a hunting license
AND an FID card is required. Persons 15 to 17 years must have
written consent of parent to obtain a hunting license. Also,
Persons 15 to 17 must present either 1) a written statement
saying that said person will be accompanied by a duly licensed
    adult, 2) produce a prior year's hunting license, or 3) produce a
    certificate of competency with firearms.

Persons 12 - 14 years may participate in hunting when accompanied
by a duly licensed adult, provided that a single bag limit is observed
and only one weapon is used by the two. Only one minor per adult.

Sorry for leaving out some bits of information. We live in NH and
the hunting is for ducks and occasionally deer, crows, small birds.

         Thanks.

There is no minimum age in NH for hunting.

At 16, you need a license and a hunter safety course is needed to get the
license.

Before 16, no license is needed, but the youth must be accompanied by a
licensed adult (not sure if adult needs to be over 21 or just 18). I'm
not sure just how close "accompanied" means, but I would keep the kid within
sight and voice contact at all times.

If the kid shoots a deer, he/she is supposed to attach a hand made deer tag -
rule books used to describe required info.

I do not believe the kid needs either the Federal or State waterfowl stamps
for duck hunting.
982.5What does DULY mean?SENIOR::PENNINGMon Jul 15 1991 11:548

What does "duly liscensed adult mean" ? I take my 14 year old brother
out bird hunting with us all the time. You know how 14 year old's are!
But I have never let him shoot my shot gun. I think this is the year
    I let him.

    Thanks for the info-

>What does "duly liscensed adult mean" ?

In this context, it means "properly." In other words, in order for you to take
junior out deer hunting, you have to be 18 years of age and have a valid deer
hunting license yourself (ie, small game license wouldn't cut it.)
