| Ok guys, I need help. I had to put my dog down a couple of months
ago, and the female that my brother's friend was going to breed
got stolen.
I'm looking for a english springer spaniel pup. I
want a female no more than 9 weeks old, and from a hunting blood
line only. I've checked out Grouse Wing, and Hedgerow kennels, they
don't have any available right now. Yes I know there's a canine
conference also.
Thanks

|
If you're buying a used one, be careful. The 742 has a tendency to
develop cracks in the bolt slide rails of the receiver. This happens
more often than not. Additionally, the locking lugs of the bolt dig
into the receiver when the bolt is thrust back after firing. The more
the rifle is fired, the deeper the grooves. In severe cases, I'm told
the bolt can lock up in those grooves. If you're unsure what to look
for, consult a competent gunsmith. Remington did ECO the problem. The
rifle is now called the model 4, model 7400 and a Sportsman version is
offered. The model 7400 is available in carbine form.

| re: .2
Well, it's light for a semi. Of course, bolt actions are lighter.
I have an H&K weightlifter's model 770 and it weighs a ton. That's
.308....the .30-06 version is a pound heavier!! My friend has a
BAR that is chambered for .270 and it weighs about the same as my
H&K and sure feels heavier than my 742. Then again, my 742 has
the short barrel.
BTW, I understand the 7400 jams a lot. I've seen this first hand.
I've fired my 742 quite a bit and it has never jammed.
When we were antelope hunting this year my partner fired his first
shot at a buck from his BAR .270. I was done hunting and I was
helping him hunt. As I watched the shot go between the bucks legs
I kept thinking to myself "shoot! Shoot!". There was this 5 second
delay (200 yards in antelope terms) and finally he shot (and missed).
I asked him what took him so long and he said his browning jammed
again.

Thanks for the Northern Zone info. What I'm looking for is numbers
(I want to PLAY!!) Want to be able to try out some deer calls and
such to see the reaction of the deer, maybe I'll learn something.
If I did this in my homestate of N.H. or in Maine I doubt I would
be able to experiment as you don't get to many chances up here.
I mean if a deer steps out of the hemlocks in N.H and Maine I think
there lost. As far a large deer with racks I'll Hunt N.H. as I feel
we have much better sized deer here. So as you can see N.Y. is
something new and exciting, with all the storys ive heard I,m anxious

besides by the time N.Y. opens I should have my Big N.H. buck hanging.

These guns are known to jam..
Get yourself a used Winchester Model 100 in .308 and that will
be the best purchase you ever made for an auto. The gun is
discontinued by winchester because they could not build it and sell
it for what the 742's were being sold for. The Model 100's design
is from the garand (spelling could be off there) and was and still
is a great gun. You should be able to find a nice clean one for
around $375. At any rate check it out you might find you like it.
Re:7 These Maine Guides don't impress me with what they carry for
rifles. The 742 or now Model 4 is nothing but a cheap-Auto...for
the majority and misinformed. Its like the 30-30 its overrated
and overused its the gun the won the west and thats about it
all the 30-30 is good for is making a lamp out-of they should
bury the 30-30 with Custer its time has passed.

55.22 | Now, Now,,Relax! | GENRAL::BOURBEAU | | Wed Dec 14 1988 12:05 | 22 |
| Rap,
I think that either you don't know much about the 30-30,
or you choose not to. I agree that for almost any game, there's
a caliber that will do the job better, but that doesn't mean that
the 30-30 is useless. I wish I could show you the large number of
deer that have been and are cleanly killed with 30-30s. In past
days, the 30-30 was found to be effective on elk and bear, and I
wouldn't be surprised to find that some buffalo were taken with
it.
The 30-30 , because of its ballistics, requires that the hunter
be skillful in getting close, and able to accurately place his/her
shots. It's not for the guy who hunts from a lawn chair on top of
a hill, and shoots at targets 400-500 yards or more away.
I'm not suggesting that everyone, or even anyone, run out
and buy one, but I think you're being too harsh with the old gun.
I know several people who still use it, and seldom fail to score.
Every person to his/her choice of tools, I say. So long as he/she
can use them well.

RE:9
Oh I know all about the 30-30 and how it killed more deer than any
other caliber. But, its been around a lot longer too.
I know a lot of people like the lever-action and Im no exception,
but when ever they ask me to get them a 30-30 I always bring up
the 35 marlin and later they thank me for it.
With all the calibers on the market I dont understand why one would
want the 30-30. If our calibers of today were available back then
the 30-30 would of been history.
As far as hunting close to test your skill. Why don't you make it
real interesting and use a .444 marlin-- I do.
I respect ones choice and if that what they like more power to them.
Its just that all you hear more from new young hunters is "I have
a 30-30" big deal.. thats just like the 357mag it overrated---
the word Magnum -people don't understand it- they think it the all
mighty- They should look at the 45 long colt or other Non-Mags theird
be surprised.
Its like the 7mm mag it only has 200 more pounds of knock-down power
than the .270 and once youv'e shot the 7mm mag over 300 rounds or
15 boxes of ammo it loses--it only has the velocity of the 30-06.
Most people don't know this--You think the MFG going to tell us--
My father has been building custom rifles since the 40's we thought
we were wrong with our finding but 6 other Smiths agreed.
The lans in the barrel rate of twist never was perfected.. after
300 rounds you have an 06.
Better get off my soapbox-- YOU are right thou---I will and do respect
other peoples views allways have.
Take-care and good hunting.

| Thanks for the reply Rick. I do agree with what you say in general.
If someone is asking about a first deer rifle, there are better
choices. I guess we've both made our points. I love my Winchester
model 94 in 30-30, and I believe that I could take a deer down with
it, but I'd still take my 30-06. I just feel that the ol' thutty-thutty
is OK in the right hands.
By the way, if I go elk hunting next year, I'm taking my CVA
.50 percussion with buffalo bullets. I like to try to get close

| Off the subject of 742, which is a perfectly fine gun:
My hunting partner went back to where we had hunted Elk in Idaho.
When we were there in October, we got rained out. He returned
in November during blackpowder season. He said that he had seen
more Elk during this week than he had ever seen in his life....
lots of bulls. The mountains were covered with snow and they were
easy to track.
This guy is about 40 years old and guided in Alaska for ten years.
With his hunting experience he said that he was unable to get close
enough to take a shot with a blackpowder gun. Take it for what
it's worth.
He said on the last day they tried to lob some lead on one bull
like a mortar. The elk stood there undauted while they let about
ten rounds go. Never came close.
My point is that if you spend the money to go on a guided elk hunt,
which is typically around $2,000, then you might as well try it
with a rifle where you have a decent chance. But that's just
one guy's philosophy.
Brett.

The Model 760 is the pump rifle. The gun your looking for has been
reintroduced recently (last year?) but only in .06. A couple of
my friends use the gun your looking for. One loves his, the other
hates his cause it jams quite a bit. One article I read said that
all these guns are likely to jam if you use a hot load because they
have relatively weak extractors when compared to a bolt action.
The author recommended hand loading down to something moderate that
had less tendency to give you trouble.

55.62 | my experience thus far... | TINCUP::BILLINGSLEA | Mark | Fri Jan 25 1991 10:55 | 40 |
| Mike,
First of all, it is not a "cure-all". The benefits I have of good
basic obedience with the dogs has been the best reward. However, I
found myself in a situation in which, I could not correct the dog "in
the act" by the time I got within arms-length to correct or ear-shot to
say "no", they were no longer committing the undesirable behavior.
Probably *the* most important thing is to let the dog wear the dummy
collar for about a week (so that they get used to it) before you start
correcting with the collar. If not, they learn that they only have to
be "good" when the collar is on, instead of learning that the behavior
has negative results.
The second thing is that I think you've got to be creative in how
you're going to correct a behavior and then be consistant. Also, pick
one behavior to correct and stick with that one until it is modified or
stopped. Don't be zapping the dog everytime you want to say "no".
If you do, you'll end up with a neurotic dog afraid of it's own shadow.
:-)
Also, start on the lowest setting and work up until the dog starts to
respond. On one of my dogs I only needed the lowest setting, but on
my other I had to use the hottest one.
Here's an example of how I have used it...
One of my labs had a habit of coming up to the back door step and
whining and scratching the door to "come in". It was very annoying
(especially to my wife). So, I decided that I would pop the dog
everytime it came to the back step (it only did the whining and stuff
on the step). After about 3 times, no more problem. In fact it gives
that step a wide berth now. :-)
Hope this helps,
+- Mark
ps. I bought mine used for $125. I think it was worth it. I'm intend-
ing to break my other dog of chasing rabbits this summer. :-)

I'm looking for a used H & R (now New England Firearms)

I'll pay up to $50 for a decent quality 22 caliber blank gun,
less for the 32 caliber models.

Why don't you go to your local hardware store or lumber yard and pick
up a wooden dowel rod. 5/8" ought to do it. Then, you can cut it
to fit. I did this for my two Winchester shotguns and it works fine.
And, it's a lot cheaper than the store bought variety.

| I've used a Dog Radartron for about 6 years now. It's the DT280 model, not
the new fancy one. It's been very reliable. I've sent it back to the makers
in Dallas, Texas, every time it needed to be repaired which has been about once
a year. The highest charge I ever paid for a repair was $40.
Most of the people in my training group have a Tri-Tronics. Theirs are newer
than mine and ALWAYS in the shop in Arizona. Their repair charges are double
mine and I think they agree with me that mine is more reliable. One guy has
the collar with the warning buzzer and the other one has the newer model with
the variable control long distance.
I've heard good things about the Collar Clinic but never bought from them. I
haven't sent them mine for repair since I've had such good results from the
manufacturer.

George,
the spikes that loggers use are calf length leather strapped
spikes. I have 2 pairs of these, they do work nice, how ever they
really tear up a tree.
most of the hunting catalogs (cabellas, gm, bps) all carry the
ankle hig version of these, they are ok, i also have an old pair of
these for when i used to do alot of coon hunting. these would be a
better choice for use in bowhunting your own property.
I would not recomend the spikes, alot of states have stiff fines for
damaging trees, and as i said theese babies do some damage! you would
be better off taking the extra 80.00 and putting that plus the $ for a
treestand (fixed position) and purchasing one of the climbing variety.
as far as a loggers style widger belt goes thats another big heavy
leather thing to lug along, I would say that between the spikes and the
belt my set weighs close to 12 pounds. it wouldnt be too bad if you are
going to be close to the road but I wouldnt want to treck to far with
that gear + bow + stand + a change of clothes.
if your dead set that this is the way to go, and you have strong
ankles the ankle version is the was to go, they arent as sturdy but
they do work. just be careful, especially on really rough bark trees,
I took down a 70 foot thorny locust tree this spring and the bark is
real thick and rough, i thot i had a good anchor with the spike but
when i went to start the saw the bark tore away from the tree, when
this happens it tends to grab your attention in a hurry!

When we go to PA each guy typically sets up 2 or 3 stands, for
a morning and afternoon tree stand during bow season. The best thing
we found is those 3 section ladders with straps, we buy additional
middle sections, To increase the ladder from 12 to 16 feet. You want
to talk about easy to setup a tree stand, it takes 2 minutes to put
the ladder up and strap it to the tree. Then up you go and put up
the stand, Makes it nice when you have 3 stands to put up. When your
done hunting the stand, take the ladder with you. So when you go
back out hunting or just want to go hunt in a different stand, its
a piece of cake. Just put the ladder up and get into the new stand.
You also don't have to worry about sweating and creating a stronger
odor.
