979.0. "Questions on Browning A5 replacement barrel" by HYEND::POPIENIUCK () Tue Jul 09 1991 09:50

    (Moderator, please move this if appropriate.)

    I'm looking for advice relative to my Browning A5. The one I own was
    purchased back in 1963 and is still in great shape. This past year I
    used it for duck hunting and I noticed that the inside of the barrel
    seems to be getting a bit of mild scoring, I'm assuming from the steel
    shot. The gun takes 2 3/4 in shells only and is a fixed modified
    choke.

    I noticed that Cabelas has a sale and has a replacement barrel on sale
    for 99.95 (re. $184). It will take 3" mag shells and comes with
    screw-in chokes (IC, Mod., and Full).

    Questions.

    1. This sounds like a good deal. Opinions?
    2. Can I assume that the 3" shells will operate properly, that is,
    eject without jamming from the 1963 vintage action?

    3. Can I assume that this new barrel will be fine for steel shot and I
    can reserve the older one for lead only?

    I see this as a possible means to get a whole lot more versatility from
    my one and only shotgun. Thanks in advance for replies.

    Pete

	Sounds like a good deal to me too, go for it.

	The 3" shell will most likely not eject as it has a 2 3/4" slide.
	But, you can sure shoot the 2 3/4" shell out of it.

	It will work fine for steel or lead. Order those special steel
	choke inserts, as it is not advised to shoot steel out of the
	standard ones.

    RE .1

              Right from Browning "All Invector tubes are 100% Steel Shot
    compatabile".

    re .0

             As far as using a Magnum barrel on a Light actioned shotgun
    you may want to call Browning and ask them if they are compartabile.
    There could be some thickness difference in the tongue that slides into
    the receiver of the gun. The number for Browning is (801) 876-2711.

                                                       Good Luck,

979.3Good deal while it lasted.HYEND::POPIENIUCKWed Jul 10 1991 14:488
    Well, I called Browning and the magnum barrel wont fit the 2 3/4"
    receiver. That's the bad news. The good news is that I guess this is
    the excuse I need to get that second gun ;^)

    Thanks for the advice and phone number.
