970.0. "Moose Lottery Winners?" by SALEM::MACGREGOR () Fri Jun 07 1991 13:34

    	Has anyone seen the lottery winners for the upcoming New Hampshire
    and Maine Moose hunts yet? I was wondering if they had been picked and
    if so was anyone lucky enough to be drawn. SO far I have only known one
    person that was lucky enough to be drawn and that was a couple of years
    ago. If anyone comes across THE list would they be kind enough to post
    it here.

    Bret,

            N.H. has already been picked a few weeks ago. If you received a
    letter from the state within 1 week of the drawing date you were either
    a hunter or an alternate. I don't beleive in N.H. they publish the
    names due to the "ANTI'S" harassing the lottery winners. I have put in
    for both states and didn't get lucky in N.H., or know anyone who has.
    So I'll just have to wait to see what happens in the Maine drawing.

970.3how do you know?SALEM::BOHANEKFri Jun 21 1991 11:1210
    Jim, how do you know you didn't get one if the letters haven't gone
    out yet? You don't need a license to apply so I imagine it is not done
    by your license number but by the cards we filled out. Correct?

    I am curious because I haven't heard or received a letter yet. I will
    assume that if I don't get one within the next week or two that I
    wasn't drawn.

              The winners both residents and non were posted in our local
    paper along with others.

    If someone has that newspaper could they possibly check to see if
    Anthony Popieniuck (my brother) was drawn in the non-resident section?
    I wasn't eligible as I as lucky last year and bagged my moose. With
    the odds as they are, it was probably my once in a lifetime chance.
    Maybe my brother might get lucky too. I wonder who he'd take as a
    subpermitee ;^)

970.894% moose kill in Maine!?!AKOFIN::ANDERSSONMon Oct 14 1991 17:277
    	I was on the way out the door this morning when my wife read
    me from this mornings paper that in Maine, 94% of the lucky moose
    hunters scored (942 kills out of I quess 1000 permits)!?!?! Can you
    believe that percentage?

    Andy *wondering*if*the*moose*are*dumb*or*hunters*smart?*

970.9Don't know about dumb, but sure delicious!HYEND::POPIENIUCKMon Oct 14 1991 17:5017
    Re. -1
    The percentage is about the same every year. Some a bit more, some a
    bit less. Last year, I think it might have been a little less.

    Speaking from experience, the moose in the legal hunting area in Maine
    are somewhat more wary than those further south. The ones south of the
    hunting area are dumb as stumps when it comes to trying to avoid you. I
    take my kids out almost nightly to watch them and the moose mind us
    about as much as they do mosquitos.

    While moose hunting in the Northwestern zone last year, most other
    hunters I met stated that they were having some difficulty finding
    them, while hunters fruther south could more or less pick and choose
    which one they wanted. The season is (was) two weeks later this year
    also which meant fewer leaves on the trees and less cover. ('Course
    you need pretty big leaves to hide a moose!!)

         I listened to the Maine moose lottery drawing last night on the
    radio and talk about luck! Two out of the five of us that applied in
    the SW zone got a permit. We havn't gotten one since 88'. I had planned
    on going to Rangeley this weekend to mow the lawn at camp so I guess I
    I'll start searching for the right one. The radio station stop
    broadcasting around permit # 750 due to coverage of the sox game and
    and the only zones that still had openings were NW, SE, and NE.

    Thanks Mike. The local paper only listed those winners from York

    Try again next year. I heard that there were about 80,000 applications

               I know what you mean, I have been trying since 80', 82'-92'
    with no luck. I guess there was actually 83,000 applications in the
    bucket. I have all I can do to get a any-deer permit some years. Well
    I did get up to camp in Rangeley this past weekend and saw some nice
    looking animals, actually out of the ones I saw yesterday morning there
    were three decent bulls one of which would of made any lucky permit
    holder quite happy.
970.26Maybe Next YearDNEAST::MAHANEY_MIKETue Jun 08 1993 08:137
      I wasn't lucky enough again this year to get a permit but a close friend
    was so at least I'll get to go along again this year. Last year we had
    two permits for the SW zone and one for the C zone. The two in the SW
    zone was taken within the first 1/2 hour of hunting on opening day.
    The C zone permit was two days later and a good trophy. I would imagine
    the hunt will be over on opening morning again unless my friend holds
    out for a trophy.

    Well my friend and I sent our moose permit application in for the first
    time and he was fortunate enough to get picked! I was not. Oh well he's
    going with my other hunting partner so maybe next year I can get in on
    the action. Anyone else get lucky in N.H.?? He's going to Pittsburgh.

      We will be heading up to Rangeley next Thursday night to be there for
    opening day of bird season with the intent of scouting out the moose
    situation for Monday's hunt. Last year our group took two first thing
    on Monday morning and then left camp for the Central Zone which was the
    area for our third permit. I don't know if it is going to be a short
    season this year as we are going ot look for a decent one for the first
    couple of days as the permit holders have shot one about 5 years ago.
