| regarding the use of artificial calls... I was talking with 2 police
officers last week who i hunt with. Neither one of them knew it was
illegal to use rattling antlers... It's not in the abstracts, i just
looked. You think they made it "legal" just to have something in
writing about what is and is not ok to use????
Soooo, basically I guess i'm a law breaker for rattling in that deer 2
years ago... ;^)

| What if you used _real_ antlers, as opposed to the plastic ones?
"No your Honor, these are not an artificial call."

| well, I dug out my abstracts for the last 4 years, and came across
nothing that said; artificial calls and scents prohibited... If they
were in the general laws, you'd think they would put them into the
abstracts due to their widespread use... did i miss it somewhere???

Fra,
I think that somewhere in the abstracts it states that not all
the laws concerning hunting/fishing/trapping are included in the
abstracts. A couple years ago I had a question as to whether or not
baiting for deer was legal, it did'nt say in the abstracts so I called
the F&G Dept and was told it wasn't.

968.6 | Where do you load up? | TOOK::MCCARTHY | Give every man his dew | Wed Oct 13 1993 09:22 | 12 |
| Have you read your abstracts carefully this year? The normal line of
no hunting within 500' of road or building is there, but they have
expanded that to "NO LOADED FIREARM WITHIN 500' OF ROAD OR OCCUPIED
BUILDING". A couple of people got fined last year on that point when
they got out of their car, loaded up their muzzle loaders and proceeded
up a power line. After walking in about 50 yd's, they were met by a
Warden who asked if their firearms were loaded. They all got fines.

I guess they are just trying to remove the question of what is hunting?
If you load the gun and are dressed to hunt, are you hunting? Seems
like they are saying yes you are. Seems reasonable to me. Is there
any problem with this in terms of muzzle loaders?

968.8 | When is a muzzle loader "unloaded"? | TOOK::MCCARTHY | Give every man his dew | Fri Oct 15 1993 10:09 | 4 |
| MY understanding of the law is that a muzzle loader is unloaded if the
cap or priming powder is removed.

968.9 | Please clarify the 500' rule | 19280::MONDOU | | Fri Oct 15 1993 17:09 | 9 |
| re .6 Would you please tell me where this new regulation is
listed in the 1993 abstract ? I could not find it.
Under the heading " PROHIBITED", my abstract still states
Discharge of any firearm or release of, etc, within
150 feet of any such highway, etc.
The only reference to 500 feet I can find is "within
500 feet of any dwelling or building in use."

I thought the abstracts also used to say "..Within 150 feet of
a paved road.." I'll check when i go home tonight.

968.11 | It's in there. | 28214::GIFFORD | A pair of 45's beats 4 Aces | Wed Oct 27 1993 06:41 | 19 |
| Here is the exact wording out of the 1993 abstract.
Quote,
Discharge of any Firearm or release of any arrow upon or across any
state or hard-surfaced highway, or within 150 feet of any such highway,
or POSSESSION OF A LOADED FIREARM, discharge of a firearm or hunting on
the land of another within 500 feet of any dwelling or building in use,
except as authorized by the owner or occupant therof.
End quote
The emphasis on possession is mine.
So it looks like you can load up when you get out of your truck/car but
if you walk within 500 feet of someones house or barn that is occupied,
while hunting, you had better unload until you're past 500 ft.

Does this mean paved road? I'm sure that whoever decided on this wording
had something concrete in mind, but it looks like it's subject to
interpretation.

If you want to be fully compliant,and avoid
any unnecessary aggravation...note that the
1994 Mass abstracts now require:
"Stamp must be signed across face in ink
and attached to rear of license".

968.14 | steel shot only for Oxbow WMA | ORION::MARSHALL | Changes overtook the Riders too... | Wed Oct 11 1995 10:00 | 10 |
| Folks,
This year, you must use only steel shot if you hunt the Oxbow WMA near
Littleton/Harvard, MA. This is a change the director of the WMA made
and it didn't get much publicity. This is according to my gun club
Legislative Rep. who works closely with the Game Wardens. Apparently,
the director of the WMA is a stickler for rules so our Rep. asked us to
publicize this change.
