921.0. "How to Get Field Trial Info" by ZENDIA::BONIN (ULTRIX Security Standard) Fri Mar 01 1991 14:08

I'd like to attend field trials in order to check out some of
the breeds I have in mind for my next gun dog.

Where is the information on field trials published?

I live in Leominster Mass and am willing to drive up to 2
hours to get to a trial.

         Thanks
         Doug

Thank you both for your help.

And yes, I am interested in a pointing breed. My 11 year-old
American Water Spaniel has done a credible job considering
the inept training she received as the first dog I've ever
         owned.

But now that I've leaned that watching your dog is what bird
hunting is all about, I'm looking for beauty and style. The
English Setter and German Shorthair currently top my list.

Another primary consideration is temperament. I want a
hunting dog and a pet that relaxes in the house and is
tolerant of my wild two-year-old son. Looking for a Golden's
disposition in a pointer may be unrealistic, but I plan to
         try.

    Doug,

If your interests fall in the realm of pointing breeds,
I've listed a bunch of Hunt Tests and Field Trials below.

The AKC has a number for Field Trial and Hunting Test Plans
    and Records 212-696-8286.

Events in our area are usually held at three or four areas in
Connecticut (Mansfield Hollow, Thompson Dam, Flaherty Field and
?????). There are numerous trials and tests held in Hopkinton, NH,
at the junction of Rts 9-202 and Rt 89. In Brunswick, Me at Merry
Meeting Bay WMA and in the Scarborough area at one of the WMAs there.
In Mass, trials are held at High Ridge in Gardner as well as Cranes
in Falmouth, and Swift River WMA in Belchertown. You could probably
call the Fish and Game, either the Westboro field office 792-7270 or
the Permits Office in Boston 617-727-3151 to see if/when any clubs
have filed permits for the use of the WMA grounds for trials.

If you'd like to view dogs working closely to a real hunting
situations, AKC Hunt Tests, in my opinion, more closely simulate
actual hunting conditions (for pointing dogs).
