914.1 | It is a shame | SALEM::TOWLE_C | Corky | Thu Feb 21 1991 07:43 | 10 |
| Sickening, but somehow I see it as being typical of that area of Mass.
I had a similar experience many years ago. Fortunately it happened in NH as
I was on my way to a target match so I was able to dispatch the deer with a
30-06.
If it'd have happened in Mass, I'd have probably ended up going to jail for
ending the poor creatures misery.

Come on now people. Let us not rag on MA because of a dying deer.
The police were only doing their job. If you want to rag a little
why not rag on NH. I seem to recall driving down main street N.
Conway with a deer on the roof of my car and having people throwing
me the finger and putting their hands over the mouth and pointing
at the poor butchered deer. Anti hunting - animal killing
sentiments are everwhere. Not just MA.............

hell..i'm not ragging on the cop..i agree, he was doing his job..its
just a shame he couldn't have shot the thing right then and there
instead of having to wait until someone gave him permission to do it.
its was just a sad sight to see the thing trying to pull itself away
by its front legs and there wasn't anything we could do to put it out
of its misery.

The "ragging" is on the political climate which makes it impossible to do the
right thing. It was not the cop's fault for following his orders. It was the
person who gave the orders' fault. And as for "why not rag on NH?" the answer
is quite simple. The people who gave you the finger in NH did so because they
have been ineffective at changing the political climate to the point where one
cannot dispatch a mortally wounded and suffering deer. So they exercised their
right to free speech. BFD. They are the ones with the problem. At least you
can do the right thing in NH...

Nobodys "ragging on MA". As the Doctah said, it's the political climate that
is being ragged on.
As for having people in N Conway flipping you the bird, I'd be willing to
bet that 99 % of them are Mass transplants OR yuppie tourists from Mass...

resent that implication in all manner of things... I thought we were
above making ignorant blanket statements such as that.

Are we tunnel visioned that we can't take some kidding, I saw it has
humorous, well be raised with a last name that ends in ...ski, I
learned to always find the humor in remarks.
There was one thing I did notice at Logan. When I walked into the
airport with a cased rifle, they gave me cleared berth. Came into ATL
and they'd ask me what I was packing. guess its just a slight cultural
diffences between MA and America.

| Let me get this straight! The cop was getting someone elses permission!!!
Who's this someone else? A trained expert hired by the State who decides on the
legal, moral, and political ramifications of doing the right thing? Is he around
to help the police make a split second call when they use their gun for defense
or arrest. Were only talking human lives here, sorry I forgot myself.

They operate like used car salesmen. The one making the sale
can NEVER ok the final price. He has to take off and see the
owner/mgr/chief crook. This way those around him don't hit too
hard.
If it happened on a back road with no traffic in sight, you can
bet the castle there wouldn't be any "permission" needed.
BANG! In the trunk on plastic, and on the table next week.

| I have just started to read this conference and it surprises me to
find out that there is such a dis like for hunter in the Massachuses
area. I am from Albuquerque N.M and I saw the same situation only
with an elk, a state trooper pulled over and put him out of his
misery. I hope we don't get any animal rites people like that over
here. I don't know about the rest of you guys but if it wasn't for our
hunting dollars here in New Mexico I don't think that we would have very
many deer, elk or other game you name it we have almost everything
commen to North America except for moose.

914.14 | probably a local CYA type | SA1794::CHARBONND | You're hoping the sun won't rise | Fri Mar 01 1991 07:03 | 12 |
| re .13 I think this was a local cop, probably never had to deal with
the situation before. Maybe the chief doesn't particularly encourage
his officers to take initiative. Maybe the chief has had problems
with anti-hunters from having put an animal away in a previous
incident.
Mass. _is_ an ultra-liberal place, but there are still a lot of
good 'ol boys and girls who like to hunt and fish, who like guns,
the outdoors, camping, who understand about life and death in the
wild. Who know what the right thing to do is in a situation
like this. It's just that the ignorant have a _lot_ of pull in this
state.

| I understand that the north is full of ignorant narrowminded commie
pinkos. Is that true? I know that down here in Georgia, it's just
good ole boys and a couple rednecks. Don't worry though, the season
for rednecks and narrow minded ignorant individuals is coming up next
month. And guess what, no limit!
