881.0. "Input on Jackman Maine" by SALEM::BOHANEK () Wed Jan 02 1991 13:28

Due to the incredible amount of newly and increasing posted land
in the area of Maine where I hunt (Harmony/Ripley/ St. Albans) I am
looking for a new camp. I have found a camp that sounded good, the
owner sounded competent on the phone and the cabin sounded like what
I am looking for. I am wondering if anybody has had any experiences
they would like to share with me about Attean camps in Jackman ME. ?
I also don't know much about Jackman but the camp owner says that
it's all open paper company land up that way. Is this true ? What kind
of hunter pressure is there in opening week ? Any info would be
    appreciated.

    Thanks
    Brian

Brian, i have hunted in Jackman in 1986 and 87. I didn't see any posted
land the two years i hunted there, but there are a large number of
hunting camps. So most of your hunters are out of staters. The deer are
not thick, they are in scattered pockets like hunting in the allagash.
The moose population is very heavy, probably three or four to one with
the deer herd. But if you do see a buck there is a good chance of it
being a big one. send me a message on btovt::moultroup if you have any
    more questions.

You say there are a lot of camps, does this also imply that if I go I
can expect to see a lot of hunters or is there enough land to go
around? I really like hunting as secluded as I can with undisturbed
deer. Can anybody recomend a camp with of the features listed above ?
I don't need a guide but would like to have input from the camps owner
about good areas he/she has recently scouted. I prefer a camp that has
two bedrooms, lights, running water and heat.

Brain the two years i hunted in the Jackman area i didn't see anybody
in the woods but their were numerous hunter evident on the roads. The
camps i spoke about were not individual hunting camps but guide owned
camps where they will guide you if you want or they will let you hunt
on your own. They will offer advise on were to hunt if you ask.

I personally have had zero experience hunting in the Jackman area.
Unless you call The Forks as part of Jackman (about 30 miles south).

    Brian,

I spoke to a person from JACKMAN yesterday and he said that the
hunting is excellent and very little posting. I asked if he could
recommend an outfit/camp. He told me that the ones that live up
in Jackman are all pretty good and know the area well. The two
guys that he knew well are no longer in business. When I see him
again and if I have a little more time I will press him for more
    details.
