876.0. "Fred Trost, Michigan outdoors topic" by LUDWIG::BING () Wed Dec 19 1990 13:08

I'd like to start this note to discuss the show Michigan Outdoors,
which is hosted by Fred Trost. I find it a very informative show
and would like to use this note to share some of the things that
    FT talks about.

For the past two weeks FT has had waht's called big buck night
the largest spread on a whitetail was 33 and a third inches and
the most points was 30! I noticed that the more points the deer
had the smaller the rack became.

He also had a buck that had 6 legs. The deer had four regular legs
but on it's back about where it's shoulder blades are you could see
where there was a small hind leg growing out of the deers back.
It was shaped just like a leg and even had a small hoof, when the
taxidermist skiined it he said there was another growth under the
skin that looked like the start of another leg. he also mentioned
how the hair around the two legs was like that of the rump of a
deer. To look at it, it looked like the deer had a butt on it's
    back.

This show is really good and FT is really for the sportsman. He
believes that hunting is not a sport but an activity, but also
believes we have to act like sportsmen. The show airs on channel
11 from New Hampshire on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. This is in the
Boston area. If you can check it out.

                                     Walt

I try and watch FT as oten as I can. My cable company (Hudson Ma.)
broadcasts CH.11, so I can watch. The shows are great, and I like his
attitude.(This might p-o some people) He says that hunting is an
activity, not a sport. No more a sport than gardening is. He hunts
for food, comraderie, love of outdoors,ect... but not for sport.

I was especially taken with his show featuring ammonia as a deer
attractant. Hasn't worked for me tho..

It's a show I try not to miss, and if I have to my VCR tapes it for me.
Here in the Salem, N.H. area it is also on channel 11 out of Durham,
    N.H.

I sent away for and recieved the free issue of Outdoor Digest, a
magazine that is put out by Michigan Outdoors. It seems like a good
magazine to get if you cannot watch the show. The format is basically
a hard copy of what you see on t.v. even down to the interviews.
The only thing I did'nt like about it was there are too many ads.

It's $18 a year to join but I'm going to skip it, if anyone is
intersted I can post the info for joining here.

I use to watch Michigan Outdoors back in the 50's when we lived in
Dearborn. The host at the time was a guy named Mort Neff (sp).
    Talk about long running shows.

    Tom,
876.5Don't tell me its over...CHRLIE::HUSTONMon Oct 28 1991 10:0712

At the end of yesterday's show, FT said something about next weeks show
being the last one, but after that they would still be making the
"parent show" available to stations who want it. I have 2 questions:

    1) I missed some of the message so what is he talking about

    2) Will Ch11 in Durham NH be carrying the parent show, whatever that
    is?

    Bob,

I think he meant it was the last "new" one for the year, this means
re-runs till he makes more. I believe the parent show is "Michigan
Outdoors". What we get is "Outdoor Digest". Fred hosts both shows.
If anyone hasn't seen this show I suggest you try to, it's very
    informative.

876.7Looks like OD is gone for nowFROSTY::SOUTHWORTHTue Oct 29 1991 10:098
It appears that the underwriting monies for Outdoor digest are no
longer available. So Outdoor digest as we know it will go off the air
next week. Fred Trost Productions has offered Michigan Outdoors to the
PBS stations as a replacement. The only problem is that Michigan
Outdoors contains more Michigan topics than general stuff.

I guess Michigan Outdoors is only shown in New Hampshire and
Michigan. The have been moves to get it off the air in New
Hampshire also. No luck though. Maybe Fred should but a
spend 5 minutes of his show on New Hampshire topics or maybe
even expand his production to cover both states.

He used to do Fred Trousts Outdoor Digest, but that went off
the air after last season. Same Format, but more localities.

Lack of funds(?) put an end to it.
