Here's the kick-off. Ferreting: the hunting method that uses the aid of a ferret to catch rabbits. The holes of the burrough are covered with special pocket-nets and the ferret led in under the net. The ferret chases the rabbits inside the burrough. The panicking rabbits bolt and are caught in the nets and quickly dispatched. After finding nobody left to chase the ferret emerges to be picked up by its keeper. After removing the nets no traces are left. The hunter is happy with the bag, the owner with the removal of the rabbits and the ferret with the fun. No noise, no pollution, no risk. Peter

Do you have to train the ferret or is it just instinct? Also, I'm assuming you'd have to put the ferret in a "rabbit hole" as oppose to turning it loose in a brushpile. What kind of rabbits do you hunt in this way? Scott

Training?: well yes. The natural instict urges the ferret to dive down the hole and work the burrough. training is needed to get it accustomed to it and to be able to recall them. Rabbit hole?: yep. What rabbits?: the burroughing ones with the fluffy tails. A ferret usually weighs around 2 to 3 lbs. and is definitely not a courser, just a burrougher. Peter |
