846.0. "How Many Deer per sq. Mile ?" by SA1794::BARTHELETTEJ () Tue Nov 06 1990 19:40

I have a question pertaining to approximate deer populations

for a given area. I know some factors exist such as the age of

the forest, whether it has been logged, if so how long ago, if a

fire has parched a part of the area etc. etc.

To make this easier can someone provide me with approximate info

for different settings in a NewEngland woods.

The particular area that I hunt is approx. 3 + square miles of

mostly mature forest consisting of rocky ridges with abundant oaks

and other various hardwoods, a large main swamp seperateing two

main ridges, and other smaller swamps, brooks, etc. etc.

In talking to other hunters I was suprised to hear how many
different opinions they had as to how many deer this land could
hold. I have seen 8 all bedding together in Aug. on a family hike.
The hunters that I asked seemed to think that there were about
a dozen deer inhabitting this whole area.

      What do you guys think?

I would think that you have more deer than that. but then I don't know
new england hunting. Here, In Georgia, the county I hunt, has
approximately 60 deer per square mile. Such is life.

According the an article in this month's Maine Sportsman about the
proliferation of the deer herd in the Cape Elizabeth area, there
are appoximately 60 deer per square mile in that area which is about
twice the average for the southern half of the state of Maine.
In other words, southern to central Maine averages about 30 deer
    per square mile.

Northern Maine is less, but I don't have those figures.

846.4How old is the map?CHRLIE::HUSTONMon Nov 12 1990 15:3011

    re .3,

How old is this map, it seems that the numbers don't match what the
F&G are saying. Don't know exact numbers, but there are some pretty
high deer densities in NH according to them. It was pretty scarce
for a while though, is your map old or recent

Area A (Pittsburg) and area M (southeast NH) have high densities. With the
number of any deer days in those areas, I'd have to believe we're talking 15-30
per square mile in those areas.

I'd like to Thank all of you for your responces. I tend to think
that the reply stating - less than 15 deer/sq. mile is the accurate
one for the part of Mass. that I'm hunting in.

Some of my concern to know this information was to understand
why there is so much less deer sign in these woods I hunt in compared
to last year. In talking to other hunters that hunt this same area,
they told me that they beleive that because so much of this land
has trails cut all through it, accessible with 4x4's, that they
beleive it to be heavily poached. I HATE POACHERS !!!

Anyway, that theory made good sense to me, unfortunately. I would
love to see Mass. and all other states pass laws to - jail and throw
the key away to these vultures of our woods!!

                       Thanks again, Jeff
