843.0. "Elk hunting " by WJOUSM::CONROY () Tue Nov 06 1990 10:35

Deep in the mountains of southwestern Colorado sits a quiet town
called Rico. It is about an hour and a half drive northwest of Cortez.

I went there in September with my son Dave to hunt ELK. It was
unseasonably warm but we got some bugles and Dave shot a cow with
his bow at about 6 yards from a tree stand. I had some dificulty
adjusting to the elevation and didn't get anything but learned a lot.
I will go back next year much better prepared.

The guide is Jack owens (303-967-2682). He is a great guy and put us
on elk consistently. He takes archers, black powder, and rifle hunters
(different seasons). All you have to do is buy a license ($200.00 for
    non-residents). No lottery, no waiting.

Jack can move around those hills on foot like no one I have ever
seen. He has horses that were used to get within calling range altho
they were not always necessary. Jack built a cabin in the mountains
that you've gotta see. He and his wife & kids built it using chain saws
and mules. No power or phone but we used propane and radio phones in
case of emergency. It was fantastic.

I recommend anyone wanting to go there to hunt elk wont be
disappointed. Just make sure you practice running the quarter mile
with a plastic bag over your head. Rico is 8800 feet above sea level
and the cabin is at 10,300 feet. The air is THIN. Even if you
still hunt or hunt from a stand, you'll need to improve your lung
    capacity thru exercise.

If anyone wants a flyer, send/author and I'll get it to you along
    with details of the trip.
