827.0. "Hunting Costs You >> HOW MUCH !!" by SA1794::BARTHELETTEJ () Fri Oct 26 1990 20:54

How many of you have the same problem that I do - every year?

The problem is simple. Even though I've been hunting now for about
18 years, about 10 seriously for deer, at the beginning of every
season I feel obligated to buy a few-new goodies for hunting.

I think this year was the worst yet, I think I'll have to slow
down for following years or my wife might make me sleep in the dog
    house.

For example, this year extra money was there better than other
years so: 1) Upgraded from Mosberg 500 combo to Rem. 870 combo
              2) Bought new hunting pants - better ones.
              3) Built 2 more self climbing tree stands.
              4) Bought another new hat - for some reason I always find
a different/better one every year. ( the old ones
                  always worked fine! )
              5) Etc. etc. etc.

Does anyone else have this problem? At this rate the game; beit

venison, partridge or pheasant, squirel etc. must be costing around

$500.00 a pound. Now its worth it to me, now I just have to convince

my wife, or,,,, tell the dog to move....over !!!

Lets hear from the rest of you, or am I the only one!!

Well this year, I bought a pair of handheld GE CB radios +$80, A doskocil
double scoped rifle gun case $63. Topo Map - $2.50, New wool pants
$23. That's it so far. 5 more days and I'm outta here. I-470 around
Denver opens this afternoon for you Colorado hunters travelling
from Colo Spgs and all points south. Only took 8 years.

827.2never ending, what does the spouse say?OASS::SOBCZYNSKI_LMon Oct 29 1990 07:3021

Having changed hunting habitat, there were several items that needed to
be purchased to suit the new hunting style. Then there is the overkill
on logic relative to having adequate accessories suitable to do a job
properly which dictates additional equipment. Basically the clothing
cost is minimal, since hunting in the South its not as cold as it is
in the Northern areas, mind you it does get down right chilly here
sometimes. Depending how this next hunting trip goes, there may be
a need for some new boots. If my ski gloves get jammed in between the
lever and stock again when having to do a second shot new gloves will
be in order. For next season, will have to change out the scope rings,
have flat mounts, need see through.

There is one point that really tends to bother me through. The wife,
when I mention/discuss these things with her she just smiles and says
ok dear if you really need it, guess you'll have to get it. Now folks
we are not newly weds, and we aren't teenagers, so this has really
began bug me. She's not even upset about me not being home for
Thanksgiving, now she is a little miffed about Christmas though. How
are your spouses reacting to, absenses from home and upgrading in
    equipment/gear?

    Leonard,

My wife comes fro Vermont, and a whole family of
hunters. She has no problem what ever with me going away, I
hunt with my father-in-law. She also has no problem with me
spending " MY " money on equipment, toys, as long as the monthly
    bills get paid.

    		>> See thru rings.

I had them installed on my carbine and wish that I didn't.
They tend to make the scope sit-up too high. This causes me to have
to make a quick adjustment when throwing the rifle to my shoulder.

P.S How's the hunting in Ga. going ?

827.4On A Rope!CREVAS::OUELLETTEMon Oct 29 1990 08:3122

I'm hanging by a thread here! My wife works in a country setting type
office building with a duck pond in the back and picture windows to see thru.

I took up bird hunting this year.

They were all over the lawn at her office Wednesday.

She thought about me.

She thought about the ducks.

She thought about the ducks again.

She cried.

I brought one home. (cleaned out, thank God!)

She's trying to rationalize it, Im trying to help her rationalize it. But they're
too damn cute. Glad the seasons over. Got any advice before I string up a buck
in the back yard!
827.5The Frugal HunterPCCAD1::RICHARDJBluegrass,Music Aged to PerfectionMon Oct 29 1990 10:1421
Well, I'm frugal when it comes to hunting. This year, besides my
Mass license $12.50 I spent $.89 on a plastic license holder,
$4.95 for those cheep hunter orange gloves , (I've got to stop
using them when I work on my car-:) and $10.00 for a pheasant to
train the dog with, which died so I got about .25 worth of training
    out of it.

The only thing now is, if my dog doesn't get on some live bird before
the end of the season, I'm gonna go ahead and put up the $145.00 up at
Hedgerow Hunt Club, to be sure she gets some good experience. She looks
frustrated as I do right now.-:)

I still gotta buy some deer slugs for the 12ga.

Either way, these items we buy are our toy's. I used to tie flies for
fishing from December to April, only to use just a couple of them. It just
    helps past the time.

    Peace
    Jim

Yea, it has become a ritual with me to spend the late summer carefully
going through Cabela's and Gander Mountain catalogs. My wife had
never been exposed to hunting, so it has taken some work to break her
in. She used to get very suspicious when these large boxes would
arrive every year from UPS. I cook all the game I bring home and
I have a few pheasant recipes that she loves. That seems to be
    helping.

I also told her: "look, I could play golf and spend even more money,
and all I would bring home are those dumb little white balls!"

Getting back to the original question, I realized years ago that it
was just plain cheaper to go to the store and buy meat. So, I
consider time spent hunting as quality recreation time and if I
am fortunate enough to take game, it's just a bonus. Everyone needs
an occasional escape from the daily grind, and for me there's no
better way than to escape to the great outdoors. Maybe it's expensive
eating, but it's sure as hell cheap therapy.

827.10How lucky are our ladiesAIMTEC::SOBCZYNSKI_LMon Oct 29 1990 11:5834
Hi Red

Long time no talk to, well looks like our wifes come from the same
background, lucky ladies, not to mentioned they are also lucky enough to be
married to hunters. How lucky can two ladies get???

Perhaps the subject of 'see thru rings' is a topic by itself. Instead of
the open field hunting hunting in the bush means that more use is gained
from using the iron sights as opposed to the scope. I hear what your
saying about the additional height and adjusting, however. Having been
looking at them (raised rings) I've noticed that, at least appear to be,
different height rings. This I just happened to notice and now that you
mentioned it could be a critical item when considering or deciding on a set
of rings. The scope is really needed for the long shots, but majority of
the possibilities that were passed up recently would not have been if iron
sights could have been used. I was considering doing this, during the 2
week break on deer hunting, but have decided to put it off till summer.
Now an Ole Boy told, and I may try it, that one if talented enough can look
down the side of the etc..for aiming. There seems to be some potential but
well, i dunno.

I've been hunting in South Carolina, and got my first buck, 7 points,
185lbs. Will enter the details in note 270.

Lived in the bush for eleven days, will be going back out this Wednesday
night for two days.

Cheers
Leonard

In keeping with the theme of this note... waiting till next summer on
    any new rings.

November is a VERY expensive month for me...

When I go hunting for a week or 4, my wife goes shopping for a week
    or 4.

Last year, hunting and shopping cost:

    	Me Anita

    New 7400	$400 2 new dresses	$190
    100 rounds	$ 35 (reloads) 2 pairs shoes	$ 80
    New pants	$ 40 2 new purses	$ 70
    Food/Beer	$150 Perfume/makeup	$ 85
    Misc	$ 50 Misc $ 50

    Total	$665 Total $475

    Jim,

$150 for food/beer? How much beer? How many days out?

me, $16 for license, misc. new camo $30, more ammo $7.83, gas money
$10 a trip. But it's all worth it when you spend time in the woods.

Leonard, I don't see you in 270. yet. I shot a doe this weekend, but
    that doesn't go into 270.

I'd say we're gosh darn lucky. For a few weeks a year we can get rid of
our husbands, go out with the girls, and party 'til we puke :-).

This year I didn't spend too much in the way of money but more in time.
Less than $400 when you figure in all of the food, gas(thanks to Iraq)
and beer and licenses. But I did get up to the camp. But since I spent
all of that time up at the camp, I had to spend money on moving. She
thinks I miss so I don't have to end my season early. I'm just a lousy,
poor shot I guess. Now I live just 5 minutes from one of my hunting
areas. Now I will tell you it is alot colder at night..................
