826.0. "DOE DAY" by ODIXIE::RHARRIS () Fri Oct 26 1990 13:26

Well, the season is one week old, and all I saw on opening day was
does. This weekend is doe day weekend, which means you can shoot does.
We have had a decent cold snap to make it a little more exciting. Do
you see does on doe day, or do they hide until it is buck only again?
Still looking for mr. goodbuck! The only bucks I saw on the opener
were in my wallet, and there weren't that many. Maybe this time I will
get some meat for the ol tummy.

My goal this season, get into 737. with a good one. But just getting
in the woods is good enough.

    Chow for now.

    How did you do????

Ok, will put in note 270. Question, serious, the whole blam situation
that led to the actual downing of the buck?

Well yesterday afternoon was definitely a doe day for me. I had to
pick up some lumber at a local yard yesterday and got there around
3:00PM. While I was there I thought I would go up to a freind of mine
who has a dairy farm a couple of miles from the lumber yard to sit
until sunset at 4:33. When I got to the farm I asked him who would be
on what stand and he told me to take my pick as I would be the only
one hunting today. I went across a field about 500 yards behind the
barn to a pine tree where I knew was a tree stand. There are a LOT
of deer on his farm, I always call it his game farm. There is a
cardinal rule that you must follow when hunting there and that is
not to shoot ant does even if you have a permit. I got in the tree
at 3:30 and by 3:45 the first three deer appeared to my left but
they were all skin heads (no horns). Within 10 minutes two more came
out to the field but all does or small bucks again. Around 4:15 I had
five come out about 25 yards to my right but still all skin heads. I
figured that there must be a buck nearby with all of the does around
me. At 4:25 a spike horn came out to my right about 100 yards to my
left but I figured it way to early to tag out for the year on such a
small one. If it gets late in the season I know I can always return to
his game farm to obtain some meat. I usally end up there in the Black
Powder season if I havn't tag out during the regular season.
