Bill a couple weeks ago on "The Buckmasters" they were using some
sort of set up with a tarsal gland. He tied a string to his leg
then a piece of cloth to the other end of the string. The some sort
of scent was applied to the rag and a tarsal gland tied to the rag.

he was walking around with this tied to his leg, I dont know if
it worked or not......I saw a gland in one of the catalogs and it
was dried out and needed some tarsal gland scent applied to it.
Seeing this made me kind of wary.

Perhaps this somewhat off the subject but in reading .0, urine etc., it
brought to mind an article that was sent to me. Basically the article
goes into evaluating how effective the scents etc. sold over the
counter for hunting really are. The article basically states that the
only thing really being taken are the hunters who purchase the
products, like me & others. An interesting thing happened two years
ago while hunting and I never put two and two together until reading
the article. There was this favoriate stand, ok now the stand is quite
high, so once I got up in it I didn't really want to have to get down
again. So almost each time before going up in to the stand I would
relieve myself of all the coffee consumed that morning. Now this was
being done each morning at one particular tree, no I didn't lift a leg
and am not particularly found of fire hydrants. At any rate the moral
being that many buck had been spotted by the tree, one shot there,
naturally it wasn't me who shot it. Getting back to the article, it
stated, bottom line, that although its personal choice,( no one gets
offended this way), they found that human urine which was fresher, and
thats what counts, would do a better job than the store bought stuff.
Which proves the old saying, if ya can't eat it or drink it, then .....
on it. Amazing what results it can produce. Any other hunters have an
opinion on using scents??

Seriously, the tarsal gland is supposed to signify an 'intruder'
buck, a threat to the local dominant buck. Maybe human urine
causes the buck to become curious about the presence/identity
of the 'intruder' ?

| Leonard,
On the t.v. show Michigan Outdoors they did a scent scam story.
They took doe urine etc and had it analyzed. The majority of the
so called urine was 99.9 percent glycerin and .1 percent of what
may or may not have been deer urine. Thety also said that the company
"Buck Sop" did not have enough deer in their so called farm to produce
the amount of urine they sell. When asked if they could tour the
farm they were told no. As for phermones they evaporate so quick
the urine would have to be frozen imediatley after the deer urinates.
Then IF there were any phermones in it when you used it they would
evaporate within minutes of being applied.
As for human urine... They guy took a bottle of his own urine and
put it out, they showed two bucks coming up and sniffing it.
I have the address at home to write to this show to get a magazine
on this subjct that outlines the whole story on the scent scam.
I think it is:
Fred Trost Outdoor magazine
p.o. box 1000
Bath, Michigan
I'll look it up but I'm sure that is it. The show is on every sunday
morning at 10 a.m. on channel 11 out of N.H.

Hey Leonard, if you keep relieving yourself on the same tree, are there

About three seasons ago I hunted with a friend who was a firm believer
in the use of bottled urine. As we all have watched programs, vcr tapes
and read various hunting articles and have talked to seasoned hunters,
I have reached the following conculsion, again this is my own opinion.
One is being in the right place at the right time, scouting an area
helps. Secondly, attempting to mask the human scent as best as
possible. I have become some what skeptical about the 'the sure
getter' type of products. The hunt three seasons ago, well I ate up
couple of cloves of garlic to kill the human sent. I guess it worked,
but when I went back to work the stuff hadn't processed through my body
completely well need I say more. Now we didn't see any deer, probably
because they smelled the guy I was with, but the bugs didn't bother me.
Here's a thought in passing. I buy some artifical scent, use it and see
one deer, may or may not get it depending on how well the shot goes.
Now the next day before going out for the morning hunt while sitting
down in the out house I fall into the pit, get the idea. Ok, I crawl
out and go hunt, have to be there 1/2 hour before first light, right.
That day hunting in the same spot as the day before I see a herd of deer,
take a blind hip shot and down go two, trophy types. Now the haunting
question is, which is the better hunting scent to use?
Ok Bob, glad you asked about the tree. Actually when I stated using
that particular location it was but a little acorn, now they call it the
mighty oak, gee in just two seasons too.

I'm skeptical on scents also. Up here in the north east by the time
the end of the first week of deer season ends there have been so
many people walking thru the woods that the human scent " MUST " be
everywhere. Yet hunters still manage to see and harvest deer into
the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the season.
But then again I'm inclinded to sprinkle some Fox Urine on my
boot soles and the bottom of my pants. I guess we may all be
brain-washed from the marketing of scents and body odor covers.

| Re scents
I don't have a problem using cover scents such as fox urine,
fresh earth or thigs like that. It is the sex scents that I personally
don't trust. I tend to think that something as complicated as hormones,
phermones etc cannot be duplicated nor stored in a bottle. I also
believe that movement and human scent are what scares deer most.
So if you take care of these two factors you dont need a sex attractent.
As I stated a few notes back, most of the scents are made of
up mostly water and glycerin, with about .1 percent being what may
or may not have been deer urine. If you think about like this, one
doe may urinate one quart in the 24 hour period she is in heat.
The Buck stop farm had X-amount of deer, if you take X-amount times
the one quart it comes no where close to being the amount of supposedly
100 percent deer urine Buck Stop et al produces each year.
After this was on t.v. Fred Trost (who investigated this) said
he recieved a letter from the lawyers of Buck Stop. They told him
to retract his statements or they would take him to court. He refused
to do so and had not yet gone to court nor thinks he will. Fred
also said Miliions of dollars are spent each year by sporstman on
scents and he feels we should not be getting ripped off.
I tend to believe Fred because he has nothing to gain from this.
If it was Tinks saying Buck Stop was not real I would just say it
was an ad campaign or what have you. But 100 percent deer urine?
I doubt it......Walt

This note really got me to thinking. Maybe we should investigate the
scents trapper's use, you know pure fox and such. I've seen some real
small time scent manufactuers ad's in trapping mags.
What do ya think? Should we drop this Tink's, and others that advertise
to deer hunters only and consider some real old trapper's remedys from
the back woods that have been on the market for 100 or so years?

Rick, as a former trapper (not anti, just former) I can tell you
that the REAL and PURE fox urine I used to use stinks! This stuff
is awful, I'm sure that the urine we buy in the stores is watered

I guess what I'm trying to say is, is the stuff in the stores strong
enough to hide our scent or should we be using pure stuff?

736.14 | "EARTH SCENT" | COMET::FAAST | | Wed Aug 29 1990 20:48 | 22 |
| Hello from Colorado,
I have been hunting out here for many years, and have tried probably
just as many attractants as years. About 4 years ago I was in an
archery shop when I noticed in the glass case a little brown bottle.
On the label it said "Earth Scent, guranteed to mask all human scent".
Well on a whim, I purchased a bottle.
Since that day I have seen more game than all the years prier
to the discovery of Earth Scent. All you have to do is gather up the
clothing your going to wear,( I mean everything) and put them in a
plastic bag the night befor opening day, and add a few drops, not
more than 8 or 9, and tie up the bag.
If you have ever taken a shovel and dug up some soil that was real
fertile and rich, that is exactly what this stuff smells like. In fact,
it is really quite a comfortable smell, and much preferable to
something that makes you hunt faster than you should to try and escape
the ungodly smell that keeps following you.
After the first day, all you have to do is put a drop or two on
each paint leg, each shoulder, and a drop on your hat for good luck!

| RE: -.1
I use Earth scent myself as well. I used to use Skunk scent
until I realized that I wasn't seeing much game. Since I've been using
earth scent, My luck has gone up appreciably... With a Bow, I've taken
3 deer since 1983 and the farthest one was 18 yards, closest about 6
yards! I really believe it's a combination of this earth scent and
the fact that I keep my camo's in a bag with leaves, ferns, you-name-it
from the areas I hunt. I have not been a big fan of Sex lures per-say
for a few reasons: 1) Where I rifle hunt there is a low deer density
and I may have to wait a very Looooong time for a deer to wander
withing range of the scent. 2) In Vermont my experience has been that
by the time rifle season starts, many bucks are already occupied with
the does that have come into heat by then. A doe that's in heat can
draw a whole hillside of bucks to her. When there's a real doe in
heat around, I don't believe there's much chance that the stuff works.
In contrast to this, however, I do theorize that the sex attractant
scents will work prior to any appreciable amount of breeding. This
I believe will happen during the brief period of high scrape activity
(which precludes the actual breeding) when the bucks have not had their
desires fullfilled and they are going nuts trying to find a "Hot" doe.
In this case, timing IS critical, thus the reasons why you may find
some say they work, some say they don't. I'd like to hear from those
who say this stuff works who can give a fairly accurate account of
the rut cycle they were hunting in (Pre-rut, rut, post-rut). Again,
My theory is that it will work in Pre-rut more effectively than
at any other time. I have read info on this as well, so I guess it's
not just my theory, other's have it too. I guess my experience has
just confirmed what I read.
As for the Tarsal glands....As for the "automatic drip urine
makers".... Who knows? It's all too complicated for me, I deal with
enough complications here at work, I don't personally need to deal
with molecular physics when I'm out hunting (although some of the
stuff makes for interesting conversation and reading). I do believe
that to an extent the manufacturers are trying to give the
perception that there's an easy way to get a deer... When in reality,
as most people know who have hunted a while, success usually comes
with a bit of sweat work. I mean geez, just look at their ads and
the writing on the labels of some of this stuff! They make it sound
as if all the bucks on the mountain are going to steam-roll up your
backside and jump you! BTW, I have tried Tinks #69 and a couple of
other brands of sex scent and have yet to have any success with them...
Sorry for rambling so long - Rob

Re ads for scents
I just happen to have the Bass Pro hunting catalog with me, here's
some of the ads.
Tinks #69: Made (key word) from live Whitetailed doe in heat or
estrus. 100 percent natuarl ingredients.
Notice it says MADE from, so what exactly is it and whats in it?
Ol' Timers Intruder: Dehydrated buck tarsal gland. with a bottle
of urine, interdigital secretions and body fluids.
This is supposed to reproduce a foriegn bucks rutting odor. I'm
wondering what the heck interdigital secretions are.
Buck Stop 200 proof. 100 percent doe urine collected during the
hottest five hours she's in heat.
How do they know what the hottest 5 hours are? How many deer
do they have? Beter yet how do they collect it?
For those of you who use this stuff and it works, I think that's
great. In fact I'm not saying it does'nt work, All I'm saying is
be careful of what you are buying. These company's make money by
selling this stuff, so the're going to make it sound as good as
possible.
Regarding earth scent, I like that alot myself. Smells just like
a fresh dug hole.

Tinks breath camo. Be real!!!!!!! and how about Camo soap?!!! I
think that there is to much commercialism in hunting.(like anything).
Get to basics. The next thing you know, there will be a computer that
you can mount to your rifle, and it will tell you where the nearest
deer is, its weight, and distance. Leave the commercialism out of the
sport, and leave it as natural as possible.
Oh by the way, I got a bottle of Tinks #69 free with my subscription to
'BUCKMASTERS' magazine. So, I will test this stuff out this deer
season. As for getting ready for the woods, I will take a regular

While reading some of the previous replies a thought occurred to me.
It seems that what we are attempting to achieve is to blend ourselves
into the wild, hence mask our human scent. The noter from Col.
mentioned earth scent (will have to go back and check the name) which
can be used to scent everything (clothing etc.). I was wondering about
using mink oil on the boots. I have used it on my boots, leather, to
protect them more than anything else, never gave any thought to the
oder/scent that it was giving off. Any thoughts?
Now for the clothing etc, the earth scent would be ideal. Having talked
with other hunters, more than one has told me that they wear freshly
washed clothes each day which would cut down on the human scent and also
take showers on a daily basis.

| You know I have tried a few of the natural cover scents and never
really found they made a difference. Of course here in Colorado
you really don't take up a tree stand to hunt Mulies and Elk.
You get your boots on and put some "miles" on them, glassing
ridges.
I been in the woods about a week at a time and have gotten close
to animals towards the end of the week, if you get my downwind
drift, just by watching the wind. I always try to keep it in my face.
Last year I walked up on a doe feeding in the afternoon. She was up
wind of me walking towards me. I just watched her walk by until she
was about 3/4 the way past me, she caught my drift and took off
like a light. But, I had all the time in the world to take her,
if I had a doe tag, as long as the wind is right.
One of the bulls I called in last year was with in 10 yards, the
wind was right, I wasn't ready.
I say drop the scents and watch the wind.

Last year I put all my hunting clothes in a bag with pine tree

very good spots with a lot of scrapes rubs and deer sign. It
just seemed like I was just missing the deer all season. Maybe
it was the sTINKS that I used that screwed everything up. This
year I think I'll just get some earth scent, and rely on my
scouting.
One last note! Before I started hunting I never believed that it
could be this hard! As with anything I do, I go crazy about it. I've

I noticed a small clear plastic pump spray bottle and got to thinking.
If I put some earth scent in it, it would make a nice small and
convenient way to liberally apply the scent without worrying about
spilling it all over my clothes. Anyway I picked up two small bottles
at $1.50 each and plan to give them a try, if it works the way I
hope it will it will produce a fine mist that will cover more area

736.30 | gotta put in the time | KNGBUD::LAFOSSE | | Fri Aug 31 1990 14:43 | 89 |
| Could'nt resist, had to get into this discussion eventually... 8^)
First and foremost, I think it's all a matter of being at the right
place at the right time. You could be the most careful person in the
world about controlling your scent, coming in downwind, laying some
form of scent trail (be it sex or what have you), wear rubber hip
boots, etc........... only to have your backtrail crossed by some
other hunter 10 minutes later who smokes, eats bacon and eggs for
breakfast, and has to drop a load in the proximity of your trail
and ruin all your careful preparation, you would never be the wiser...
Does this drive deer to the next county, doubtful... but they will
skirt around such "obstacles", they'll avoid the hunter but not the
area.
We've hunted some places hard for the entire week in VT and have had
good sized bucks dropped the next day in the same place. Human scent
proliferated the area, but the Bucks still came in. How do you explain
it?
In the past i've had terrific success using Earth scent. On one
occasion, upon arrival to the apple tree I would be maintaining a
vigil on that evening I proceeded to shake apples off the branchs.
I then squirted earth scent on the ground under the apple tree to
mask any scent I may have left there. I also set up several
canisters of Apple X lure around the pine I was in. I got into my
treestand 15 yds from the apple tree, and shot a spike 1/2 an hour
later out from under the appletree, he never knew I was there. I
watched in amusement as he proceeded to eat a few "drops".
Did the apple scent entice the buck in??? who knows, but with
success like that who could argue.
Two years ago, I rattled in a nice 5 pointer in Mass. (be aware that it
was the height of the rut) I had canisters of Tinks 69 scattered around
me, I rattled and the buck came in immedietly but changed course when
he scented the tinks, and headed for it. Unfortunately for him he never
made it to the "doe", I hit him broadside at 20 yards. Did the
tinks/rattling lure him in... who's to say... He may have just been in
the area and was passing through. I'm convinced however that the
rattling is what made him come in so quickly and with such abandon, but
did the tinks also get him there??? It definately got his attention when
he arrived.
Last year I had the same situation happen on the opener of mass. I had
tinks 69 (in canisters) all around my stand, 2 canisters in an active
scrape. I had fox for a cover scent (always have always will)... and
applied a liberal dose around my stand. 2 hours later I had an 8
pointer come into my stand from upwind and tend to his scrape,
supplying me with a 7 yard broadside shot. did the Tinks get him
there? or was he just on his rounds and happened to get there at that
moment? who knows.... but the Tinks kept his attention while he was
there, and didn't scare him away.
Pheromones are very short lived and are very volatile, so in the
process of collecting, bottling and marketing the "heat", the
pheromones are lost. If anyone were able to chemically reporduce these
pheromones, it would change the entire scope of the rut. While most of
the estrus scents on the market will attract bucks, they don't do it
with the same intensity as the real thing. I think bucks are attracted
to estrus scents just because they smell like a doe, not necessarily
one thats in heat, and the buck wants to check her out more closely.
Hunters should use sex scents wisely, I use them whenever i'm bowhunting
over scrapes during the archery season, where there is a real need to
lure them in close. And only use them during the rut.
When perched over feeding areas, a person would do well to use food
attractants, such as apple, corn, acorn etc... depending on what type
of feed you are overlooking.
I don't believe that by using sex scents, i'll have deer chasing me down
all over the woods, and people should'nt think this will be the case.
When stillhunting they would be a waste. Under these types of situations
a fox cover scent is all you'll need, and even so nothing beats a
favorable wind. I apply fox urine to my pant legs before going
anywhere, it works well and I have never had deer take off just from the
smell of my trail.
I've had terrific success using scents, but don't rely solely on them.
I watch the wind, use camo, make no noise, don't smoke, keep clothing
as odor free as possible, and try and bowhunt from trees whenever
possible. I get in plenty of pre-season scouting and trim shooting
lanes. But most of all, i'm out there in the woods hunting as often
as possible, this alone increases your odds dramatically.
Being out there on stand, thats the key...

736.31 | sure-fire test for doe lure | FREEBE::OSOWSKI | | Thu Sep 06 1990 16:38 | 11 |
| Just to add my 2 cents worth on the topic of scents, a sure-fire
method of testing out doe estrous type scents is to take a cannister
filled with cotton and of course wetted with the lure, place it
upwind of a buck that is at a zoo or some type of animal farm and
see if you get a noticeable reaction of any kind from the buck.
This is supposed to work anytime of the year, a buck will always
be interested in a estrous smell. I will be testing this method
out for the first time this year at a animal farm with deer, but
I beleive it is the only real way of testing out a brand of doe
lure to see if it works. I've also read that other male animals
closely related to deer will work also.

That's exactly what I do and it works fine. I even bought earth scent
insect repellent in a pump spray. It is in a 4 oz. plastic bottle that
rides in my day pack just fine. Earth scent is the only scent I use
anymore. tried some of the attractants like everyone else seems to have
and skunk cover scent. Earth scent smells nicer then any other cover
scent to me anyway. I never had any change using attractants no better
luck and no worse. it seemed to be money i spent that didn't do
anything good or bad just a total waste of money.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE THIS SEASON
i'VE GOT THE BOW WARMED-UP AND IDLING, 10 DAYS TO GO.

736.33 | some more info on sex attractents | ROULET::BING | Yes, I too am the NRA/GOAL | Tue Sep 18 1990 15:58 | 55 |

I tried out the pump spray bottle and it works great. I was able
to apply it evenly and without any mess. By the way where did you
get the ES insect repellant in a pump spray?
I've been watching "Michigan Outdoors" the past few weeks. They
have had special segments on about sex attractents. Anyway this
past week they had on two special guests, one was from a guy who
supplied "Buck Stop" and other companies with their "deer Urine".
The other was the Attorney General of Michigan.
The supplier of the deer urine wanted to thank the host for turning
the scent indusrty upside down. He also admitted that he was supplying
synthetic urine to the companies and they in turn sold it as "Pure".
He also said that he knew of only 8 gallons of "Pure, right from
the deer in heat, urine" that was ever extracted from deer. he said
if they bottled it and sold it in 8 oz. bottles it would cost "MUCH"
more than $8-$10.
The AT's office has also been looking into this scam. If I remember
correctly he said that they had to prove intent to defraud the public,
before any actions could be takenm against the scent industry. The
case is still under investigation by the USA and Canada Govt's.
Meanwhile, they showed ads from last year by Buckstop et.al. and
ads from this year. The noticeable difference was that the ads no
longer said, "Pure", "Brings em' in from miles away" etc.and were very
vague about what was in the bottles. They also showed a Tinks #69
Doe-in-heat label and it no longer said "contains pheremones".
(I have'nt seen the changes yet myself, maybe it is still last years
supply on the shelf).
About synthetic urine, the host of the show says he has no problem
with synthetic urine as long as it is sold as such. He also said
synthetic urine will last longer than real urine which breaks down
to ammonia quickly. (he was upset at the industry selling SU as
"Pure").
Draw your own conclusions from this info. If you want more info
write to:
Michigan Outdoors
P.O. Box 1000
Bath, Michigan
They will send you one free copy of their magazine "Michigan Outdoors"
which has articles on the scent scam. I sent away for it and am
waiting for it. If I find out more I will post it here.
Walt
p.s. Good luck to all and have a safe and productive hunting season.

I got an 6 oz. spray bottle of earth scent insect repelent at WalMart
here in Texas for about $4.50. Probably most sporting goods stores
would carry it.
P.S. I'll let you know how it works next week I'm gone with the bow
on friday for a 2 week hunt.
