734.0. ""KMeer Deer" call" by WMOIS::G_PELLETIER () Fri Aug 24 1990 08:27

    I recently purchased a "KMeer Deer" call manufactured by Lohman,
    with the instructional tape.

    Even if the darn thing don't work I have had a lot of fun listening
    to the tape in the car and trying to imitate the sounds.

    Question: Has anyone out there tried this call?
    	      How did you like it?
    	      If it did call deer in, how close did they come?

    Last year in Pennsylvania I seen many a deer in fields when I was
    walking out in the latter part of the afternoon (Just out of range
    for bowhunting). I wonder how they would have reacted???

734.1DON'T BLOW IT!!!ODIXIE::RHARRISFri Aug 24 1990 15:4417
    I was watching a video of deer hunting the other day at a deer hunting
    convention, and the hunter in the tree stand had a gunt call. The deer
    was about 20-30 yds away, and he blew into it lightly. You should have
    seen that deer run.

    I guess the point is that once you have your deer in shooting range,
    pick up the rifle and let go of the caller. Because, if the deer is
    close enough to you for a shot, it will spot you when you grunt again,
    and then its bye bye!!!

    Looking forward to opening day of October 20th! Firearm season for
    deer ,  here in Georgia.

    By the way, I personally have had no luck with any call.

734.2 Maybe deer just don't understand meOASS::SOBCZYNSKI_LSun Aug 26 1990 10:0712

    About two years ago I tried using a deer grunting device (wind
    instrument), watched the tape etc., and cannot honestly say it worked.
    Nor can I say it didn't work. Reflecting back I wonder what message
    was being received by the deer when I attempted to use the device? We
    have a goose at home and it gets going when I start using the device.
    Sooo next season, with deer grunt in hand, its off goose hunting.

    Cheers

734.3BLOW IT OUT YOUR GRUNT CALL!!!ODIXIE::RHARRISMon Aug 27 1990 11:3914
    Me again! I guess the theory of the grunt call is to attract the
    bucks. If a buck is in the area, the grunt will sound like another
    buck invading his territory, then he comes to check it out. The
    property that I hunt did not have that many bucks on it last year. Alot
    of does though. Maybe that is why it didn't work. Now, if you watch
    the show "Buckmasters" on TV, they are always hunting in Texas, big
    buck country, and always call up a few bucks. I think that the buck
    ratio is not that good, or maybe my call says, " Stay away, there is a
    hunter in a tree stand that doesn't know how to operate a grunt call
    properly!!!"

    54 days and counting!!!!!

734.4Gotta have more than one call..DNEAST::STEVENS_JIMMon Aug 27 1990 13:4413
    Two years ago I bought a Bleet call....You know, a doe's call.

    I swear I had a conversation with a doe. I'd give a little call.
    She replied..I replied. But I never coaxed her out of the thick
    evergreens.

    Last year I had a grunt all..Don't know if it worked..Used it a few
    times but nothing ever investigated the call..

    Well, there is this year !

    I have used the grunt call before , I to have used it on bucks that
    were out of range for bow and they ran like hell.
    The thing I didn't realize at the time was these bucks were not the
    dominent buck, they thought that I was and left the area.

    The opposite happens if it is used on the "boss" he will come in to
    defend his territory.
    Unless the doe is "prime" it won't affect her at all.

734.6Distinguishing BucksOASS::SOBCZYNSKI_LWed Aug 29 1990 08:5112

    ref. -1

    How does one distinguish ( can one) bet the dominant and others? I
    would assume that non dominant types would roam together, as opposed to
    a buck roaming with its does. Is this correct or?

    PS: I wouldn't think it the one with the largest.....

    cheers

    Bob,

    	Which call was it? Was it the "KMEER Deer cal or some
    	other brand?

    	So, far it (KMEER DEER CALL) hasn't produced any thing
    	for me. But' I'll have to make sure I try it if I see
    	one to far off for a clean kill.

734.10I think it works. It pissed off one deer...SALEM::TOWLE_CCorkyWed Nov 21 1990 13:4050
 In the last 2 weeks I've had 2 experiences with calls. The first was using
the Kmeer Deer call and the second the Scotch Grunt call.

 Both instances happened after last light and I although couldn't see the deer
I'm pretty sure there was one there. At least the second time there was.

 The first one with the Kmeer Deer I'm leaving the woods not paying any
particular attention to quietness and I hear a nyeeaah off to mt left. I said
to myself , "hey! that sounds just like the Kmeer Deer call!!", so I pull
mine out, blow into it and get an instant comeback. This exchange went on for
about 5 minutes then the answering call to mine went several replies before
stopping and ended.

 It was way past legal shooting time so I unloaded the gun and decided to get
out of there. I heard later that a game warden was in the area looking for
poachers so it could have been him talking to me with his call...

 I've never used a call before so have no idea how a Deer, A real one, is
supposed to respond... :-) Last nights episode proves it....

 Last night, again, it's getting *real* dark, I'm on my way out and decided
to blow on the grunt call while walking out just to see what might happen.

 I blew it and heard rustling off to my right. Real close to me.

 I gently blew it again and heard more rustling and was able to home in on
where it was coming from. It was about 20 to 30 feet to my right just off the
trail.

 I slowly turned to try and see what it might be and get the gun pointed at it
then gently grunted again took a step and craned my neck to try and see it
and then it happened.

 The deer charged me! It came busting out through the pines it was
standing behind, (that's why I couldn't see it), snorted at me then turned
and went crashing off through the woods. I swear it was within 20 feet of me.

 Why didn't I shoot???

 I didn't shoot cause #1 I was startled. (actually scared $hitless and I
almost dropped the gun (-:), and #2 on account of again it was so dark I
couldn't see it's outline.

 I'd say the grunt call works. And now I know why they say to use it only when
you have your back against a tree...:-)

 Next time I'll be ready. I hope... :-)

    RE: .10

    Corky,
     I hope it was in fact a deer. A game warden using a call to catch
    poachers is like a forward air controller looking for targets: "If I
    can get them to shoot at me, I'll know where they are."
     Dosn't make for a bright future...

    Bob
734.13I was wondering that too...SALEM::TOWLE_CCorkyWed Nov 21 1990 14:2628
RE: BOB,

 Yeah I was thinking that too, but after hearing about what the new warden did
to the land owners son who was "busted" for coon hunting last week, I wouldn't
put anything past this warden.

 Ohh, OK I'll tell ya,,,

 Seems as though the land owners son and his cousin were arrested for
"poaching deer" as the warden claimed they were really deer hunting not coon
hunting as they said.

 The warden knocked the kid to the ground, put a knee in his back, held a
pistol to his head and handcuffed him and his cousin then dragged them both
out to his truck, radioed the cops and had the 2 guys taken to jail.

 They were out in the woods at 9:00PM with shotguns loaded with #4 and #6
shot, had 2 dogs with them and were carrying six cell flashlights. Yep, I
guess they wuz deer huntin alright, It's a miracle they didn't get trampled
by all them deer trying to get out of their way... :-)

 The kid and his cousin are suing.

 As I hear more I'll post it here.

734.14There is something to it for sureSALEM::TOWLE_CCorkyWed Nov 21 1990 14:4533
re: .12 Rich,

 No I don't think he winded me. The wind was blowing pretty good from his
direction right at me. As a matter of fact I thought I got a slight whiff of
something that didn't smell right, sort of like a cross between doe scent and
dead leaves, a real musky smell, but it was only a whiff and I can't really
be sure. Things happened kind of fast so before I knew it it was already all
over.. :-) Glad he didn't run over me.. I've read stories about guys getting
mauled pretty good by rutting deer.

 Was it full light when you saw yours or near dawn/dusk?

I had a guy stop by Monday night that showed me pictures of deer he'd grunted
in in practice sessions AND for real ... I was impressed.

 He's been out with his Dad and uncles and so far this season is batting a
thousand. He's 4 for 4. He got his during muzzle loader,,, grunting, and has
called in 3 more so far. 1 for his Dad and 1 for each of his 2 uncles. He
says it's a gas to watch them come charging in with this "who the hell is in
my spot" look that they get... :-) He wants to get out with a video camera
and tape a session just so people won't think he's lying.

 BTW, he hunts on the ground from a stationary blind and uses doe in heat out
about 30 yards upwind then a liberal dose of doe pee around the blind and
just starts blowing on the call. He says that all deer have been taken within
3 hours of beginning to grunt.

 He gave me some pointers and I was doing what he told me to do when the deer
charged me last night.

 I believe him. :-)
