729.0. "Westboro WMA" by NRADM::GERMANO () Thu Aug 16 1990 14:06

    I recently rode by the Westboro WMA and noticed that they added a gate
    out by the main road, RT135. Does anyone know if the hunters are to
    now begin parking on the main road?

    Not that many years ago, maybe 12, hunter's could park at the top of
    the hill by the edge of the field. They then moved the gate to the
    bottom of the hill with a Warden sometimes at the top to stop the over
    anxious. Now, it appears as though they moved us right off the land!
    Was this to return all usable land space back to the critters? Or, did
    they stop us from hunting there altogether? If not, I don't think the
    newly arrived residents of Westboro will put up with the amount of cars
    they'll find on RT 135. This is/was our last bastion east of Worcester.

    are you talking about ? Also, my brother Jeff hunts in Westboro
    quite often..

    Jim, I'm refering to the Wildlife Management Area located on RT. 135
    just down the street from the Fish & Game headquarters. There's a large
    sign denoting the area facing RT. 135.

          Just got off the Phone with the Westboro Woldlife Management
     area. The Gate is there due to some idiot with a 4x4 going around
     the earlier gate. The gate at the road will be open during Bird
     season. Also if you want to go in there now it's alright just you
     have to park on the Road. It's a shame some jerk almost screwed
     it up for the rest of us.
729.4Thanks!NRADM::GERMANOThu Aug 16 1990 16:019
    Thanks for the information. I thought sure they were putting and end to
    another one of our haunts. For the life of me I don't understand how
    that area has been able to stay intacted for this long. What with the
    new housing across the street and the new sports complex next to it, I
    never would have thought it would last this long. I've had many a good
    day's hunt up in there. I don't hunt it much anymore, but it's good to
    know it's still there!

729.7Another GateASDS::KELLICKERThu Aug 16 1990 18:0410
I believe there is still a second entrance from what use to be the boys
school. If you go by the main office and bear left, when you can, and
follow the road it leads to a parking area. From the gate you have to walk
about 200 feet to the first field. The field trialers use this gate for
entry. I think the airplane folks do also.

Good Luck,
Bill
729.8Is it crowded on weekdays?CHRLIE::HUSTONFri Aug 17 1990 09:579

    Excuse my ignorance and all, but I'll ask anyway :-).

    Does it cost anything to hunt on a WMA? Though I haven't hunted in
    MA for several years, I seem to remember hearing about a pay by the
    bird rule? Or am I just way off base.
