720.0. "Peep's S" by NRADM::GERMANO () Tue Aug 07 1990 14:40

I've recently finished converting a military stock on a Mauser 98 into
what's called a British stalking rifle. A pretty name for a stock with
a shortened forearm. This is my pet rifle. I want to put a peep sight
and a very low front bead on it. I've had previous success with a
Redfield peep minus the aperture on California Mulies. At that time it
sat on a Savage M99 .308. This time it'll be on a 7X57. Who out there
uses peep sights and what's your opinion of a peep vs buck horn and
scope sights? Has anyone put a peep on the new Winchester XTR's. My
brother has in 7-30 Waters with a 26 inch barrel. I should'nt say new,
they discontinued this combo last year (?). This I thought was a really
bad move. This is probably one of the best lever/barrel/caliber combos
ever for Maine type terrain. And with a peep, probably THE best combo
ever when shooting the 139 grain heads. Did the receiver have to be
drilled and tapped? Can anyone suggest a supply house for sights?

720.17-30 Waters still available.DECALP::HOHWYJust another ProgrammerWed Aug 08 1990 10:1929
Pg, I seem to recall having spotted the 7-30 Waters
chambering in the latest USRAC catalog. This time though,
the Model 94 barrel was 22" (a better choice, in my mind,
for what is supposed to be a fast handling carbine type
gun). So it seems like this nice combination is still
	available, only better!

Peep sights vs scopes: Peep sights are faster to get on
target and not susceptible to bad weather. Scopes are
better in poor light conditions and obviously on VERY
long shots (although aperture sights can produce some
	pretty amazing long range accuracy).

Lyman and Williams supply reciver sights. Check out the
Brownell's catalog. They have a ton of receiver sights in
	there.

I have always had this idea, but never seen it offered by
anybody: I want a lever action with a scope in QD mounts.
I also want a receiver sight which sits on a QD mount
which will fit onto the rear part of the scope base. Voila!
The perfect combination: a scoped rifle when you want it and
peep sighted when you are in the woods. Ofcourse, in my
ideal system, return to zero was pretty much guaranteed,
and the mount was not TOO expensive... Nice thought, anyway.

Mike, I'm not sure how much difference you'll find in handiness in
barrel lengths from even 20->usually 24 but sometines 26 inches.
Really, when it come to deer hunting cover too thick to shoot a 24 or
26 inch barrel in is probably too thick to go through for anything but
pushing deer out to standers or just trying to get them moving. We hunt
the Allagash and I feel quit comfortable with a 24 inch barrel. I'd
also feel comfortable with a shotgun but more for that big bead at the
front for short ranges rather than a shorter barrel because of brush.
    But each their own.

I have Brownell's cataloge. I'll probably end up ordering through them.
I know I've seen tip off's for lever guns but I'll have to try and find
a manufacture in my books. With a receiver sight, good luck!
