689.0. "Phesants in South Dakota" by CURIE::MARINO () Mon Jul 09 1990 13:56

    Has anyone hunted pheasants in South Dakota? A friend and I are looking
    into places to hunt there. Apparently, the limit is around 13 birds a
    day. I have given up on hunting pheasants in MA. due to the crowds and
    limited areas to hunt.

689.1Heres a little info.CSC32::SCHIMPFWed Jul 11 1990 12:5527
    I've never hunted in S. Dakota, but here is some info from the
    July/Aug. issue of Hunt Mag.

    License Fees: NonRes. General hunt license --- $ 5.00
                  This is for a 5 day period.

                  "    " Small Game License    --- $ 50.00

                  "    " Dakota game stamp     ---  $ 8.00

    It really doesn't tell which or if all the licenses are required.

    The limits according to the mag. are 3 Cocks a day; Poss. limit after 5
    days is 15.

    I know this isn't much too go on; Ya might want to write or call the
    Wildlife Dept. for S. Dakota to get more specific info. What I got
    this from was basically an article about a part. outfitter..

689.2Iowa > S. DakotaGLDOA::CAREYFri Jul 13 1990 16:0110
    Unless it has changed this year, out-of-state rates and bag limits are
    the same in Iowa as those just posted for South Dakota. I would
    suggest you consider Iowa (the central part of the state is best in
    general) - it's a shorter drive and it is <arguably> the best state in
    the nation for the colorful birds....... Season opener is usually the
    last Saturday in Oct.; go then if you can

    a forgiener(out of stater)...?

689.4IOWA is GREAT!!!DNEAST::SCHNEIDER_JASat Jul 21 1990 21:3313
    	I AGREE!!! with .2*** I spent 3 weeks in IOWA last fall, Cedar
    Rapids, Iowa City and down near Burlington... Walking the cricks
    (brooks to you NE'ers) and drainage ditches we put up clouds of birds.
    I wore 17 lbs off of one dog and ten from another, and those were just
    my dogs.

    	Late season is good too. After the snow flies, the cocks sit
    tighter and you get better shots. Lots of CRP land in some areas,
    that's a real challange for a dog....

    Looking forward to going back!!!

    hunting in S.D. Can anyone tell me what the big game fee are and
    if their is a good herd of either animal there.

689.6SD is the placeMAIL::AWEWed Aug 15 1990 17:5721
    hello my name is dean,

    i used to live in aberdeen s.d. which is in the norheast part of the
    state and from my experience s.d. has the best phesant hunting.
    approx 10 years ago they raised the limit of cocks Taken per day
    because they were so plentiful.

    some big named celebrities used to hunt there every year .

    my borhter still lives there and has good luck every year.

    my wife is from iowa so i go there often and know of alot of people
    who go shoot the colorful birds and also have good luck.

    as far as which to go i would recommend iowa just becuase of the money
    but if you ever had the chance i'd make the little extra trip and go

    you definitely don't have to work very hard for the birds at either
    place

    good hunting     mdvax1::awe
