680.0. "870 Questions" by KNGBUD::LAFOSSE () Mon Jun 25 1990 16:27

    Gentlemen,

i'm sure theres some 870 efficianado's out there who could probably
    help me here.

I'm ready to buy another shotgun, and have a couple of questions...

#1 Is it true that extra 870 barrels do not fit the 870 special field?
#2 If this is the case, how much (ball park figure) would a butt stock
    cost from remington?
#3 Can I assume that a special field buttstock would fit the
    wingmaster?

What i would like to do is pick up the 870 "Special Field" and have it
tapped for scope mounts (your probably all cringing). I really like
the looks of the stock, i love the fit, and the satin finish. The 21"
barrel length is perfect for slugs, but it would be nice to pick up
a longer barrel for ducks etc... I'm not crazy bout the buttstock on
the 870 Wingmaster, something bout that metal pistol grip cap turns me
    off.

Am I losin it??? or does this sound feasible?

I realize it would be much better to pick up a Special Purpose for deer
and something else for ducks etc... but $$$ is definately a concern
    right now.

    Fra,

Have you looked into the "Cantaleva" (sp) model put out
by Remington? I believe it is in the "Special Field" model, then
all you would need is the extra barrel in choice of length. Also
i'm not sure if remington has thickened up their receivers for
a drill and tap mount thats why they came out with this model and
other manufacturers make the scope mounts.

                                                           Guy

    Fra,

In my order guide for gun parts; They list the Butt Stock at
$69.95...Here is their description: "These are some of the most
beautiful stocks we have ever seen made for a production gun.
Exquisitley-figured walnut, checkered with red re-coil pad and black
pistol grip cap" If you buy seperately, the forends are $45.95..But
if you purchace together you can get both for the low low price of
$99.95..(humor). These prices come out of Gun Parts Order Guide,
    15th Edition.

    Fra,

I believe what Jeff just listed here is trap dimension wood, I could be
wrong. However I just replaced my wood on my 870, because I wanted the
trap dimension wood, therefore I have an extra stock.(field dimension)

Gimme a call, we'll work something out. I'd like to hear more about
    that 270 for sale anyway.

    Fra,
Have you considered going the other way on your purchase, i.e.
buy the 870 with the bird barrel and purchase a Hastings slug barrel
latter. The Hastings barrel is rifled vrs the smooth bore on the
Remington. You'll get tighter slug groups with the Hastings. The
Hastings can also be purchased for mounting a scope or with open
    sights.
I have an 1100 SP Slug gun and the bore is smooth.

    Just a suggestion.

    Re. Hastings rifled slug barrel

If you planning on using it in Mass. for Deer, I believe that
they are illegal to use. You may want too check before going
    	that route.

    heres an update...

What I've decided to go with is the 870 Wingmaster (pistol grip stock)
with a 26" barrel... What this enables me to do is order a slug barrel
and "Special Field" buttstock from Remington at a later date allowing
the gun to serve double duty.

What i'd like to do is pick up a "Special Field", an 870 Wingmaster and
a slug barrel for the Wingmaster.... but what i'd like and what I can
afford is two different things. 8^(

    thanks for all you inputs...

Mine has a 30" inch barrel, full choke, for hammering ducks. It also
works on pheasant but you gotta let em fly for a while before you
    splatter them across the sky.

Have any of you tried one of the Hastings slug barrels on an 870? I've
been eyeing those and was wondering how acurate they really are.
