665.0. ""Gone Hunting"" by SALEM::PAPPALARDO () Fri May 25 1990 16:29

Well fellow noters i'm on my way to New Brunswick, Canada for a
one week Spring Bear hunt. I called this afternoon to see whats
been happening for the past two weeks. Week 1 they took 6 bears
and missed 2 out of 9 hunters. This week since we have had rain
Sunday thru Wednesday, they on the other hand have had snow and
rain mixed with an accumulation of 3 inches. But yesterday they
took 3 and missed 1. I'll try and get an update back on our progress
to my brother Rick during the week for posting. Then "IF" we
have success i'll put in all the details.

A hunter who is staying at the same camp took a bear Monday.

Guy had a fine bear come in, then he noticed cubs, so he decided to let
    it go.

    That's it for now.

    Is'nt technology great ?

Actually, I'm at work. That's what happens when you own a Limousine
business and Prom season kind of out weighs bear season.

Well, Tuesday My Uncle managed to take a 150 pounder and my brother
Guy on Wednesday knocked one down for keeps.

Both bears are now skinned and on ice. I'll let Guy tell
the details when he gets back.

Well guys sorry its taken so long to write about my adventures but
you know how work can be after being on vacation for a week.

The overall week was a 100% success, myself and my two uncles all
    took bear. Their was a total of 11 hunters in camp (5 w/gun & 6 w/bow).
All the gun hunters took bear and 3 of the 6 bow hunters took bear.
Everyone saw a bear, and of the 3 remaining hunters 1 lost a bear
(bad shot placement),2nd chose to wait for a bigger one, and the
3rd had a bear come in two nights in a row but no closer than 50
yards. The bears ranged in weight from 80lbs - 225lbs, age from
    2 - 10 years, sex's were 7 Bores and 1 Sow, with heights ranging
from 4 feet to 6 1/2 feet. The first day started with one bear being
being shot with a bow, myself seeing a Sow with 2 cubs, and another
Archer letting one go at 7 yards. The second day my uncle took one
with a gun, an archer spooked on when his arrow squeeked while drawing
back on the riser, and I saw one in the middle of the road on the
way back to camp. Third day an archer saw 2 small bears together
and decided to wait for a larger one, a gun hunter watch 2 bears
fight over the baited barrel for over an hour before he finally
took one, one of the archers watched a bear come in but it wouldn't
come any closer than 50 yards, and I shot my bear that night.
Fourth night 1 archer scored, a second archer again watched a bear come
in but no closer than 50 yards, another had a bad placed shot
(eventually lost it), and another gun hunter scored. Fifth night
my other uncle took a bear with a gun. And on saturday the last
archer took a bear with a bow. Well thats the trip and I can't say
i'm happy to be back, so now all I can do is oil the guns, keep
the shooting skills sharp and wait for the upcoming hunting seasons.
