I'll be doing some backpacking in the Wind River Range, WY along the continental divide, in mid-July. Trying to put together as much info from different sources as I can. What's the scoop on bears (blacks and/or grizzlies?) in that area? I don't care to hunt them just curious on their numbers and the chance of an encounter. AA

From the last time I was there 2 years ago there were some blacks
bears around. I would think that the Wind Rivere Range is just about
on the outskirts of Grizzly territory. They seem to be mostly around
Yellowstone. I don't think I would worry about it too much. There
is some spray that is made that is supposed to stop a bear in it's
tracks, I think it is called Canned Cayenne. It is made up of some
type of hot pepper and makes a bear want to get the heck away from
it. I didn't see any when I was out there. Saw some black bear tracks
but that was about it.
