658.0. "Helper Winches." by BRABAM::PHILPOTT (Col I F 'Tsingtao Dhum' Philpott) Wed May 09 1990 07:40

This isn't directly about hunting or guns, but anybody who's tried to get a
kill out of a gully or other tricky place may see a use for it...

I was looking for a portable winch and a capstan winch for a truck I have on
order and came across the following.

-----

The "Helper Winch" offers compact portable pulling power wherever it is needed.
This unique lightweight powerhouse will pull your vehicle from mud or snow with
ease, yet it also will remove your bull elk from the back country where your
vehicle can't get. Gas operated, continued duty cycle, heavy duty construction
completely portable.

-----

enough of quoting the brochure: the winches consist of a chain saw motor driving
the winch drum.

Two versions: one "conventional" with 75 feet of wire rope and a hook, and
an optional 10' remote control. 2000 lb single line pull, 35 ft/min line
rate designed to be used with pulley blocks to multiply the power to up to
8000 lbs.

The other version is a capstan winch (non captive rope) allowing infinite line
length. This comes with a 5 foot long wander lead remote with a foot control
(similar to a sewing machine speed controller) to allow you to have your hands
free to handle the line. 1000 lb constant pull (you only use one rope layer
on a capstan winch so the pull doesn't vary over the length of wire as a
conventional winch does as the layers of wire rope build up) and 75 feet per
minute (you need the extra speed because you often use quadruple pulley or more
to multiply up the power).

Both versions have a sole-plate that allows the winch to be seated on the tow
hitch of your truck, integral mounting to attach a pulley block, and
alternatively can be attached to a tree or other anchor via a 6 foot wire strop
they provide.

If interested they can be obtained from

	Helper Winch Inc.
	Box 968, Torrington, WY 82240

	telephone: (307) 532 7622
	fax: (307) 532 3834

I haven't a clue as to the US prices but they sell here [Britain] for 470 each
(a little less than the price of a conventional truck mounted winch).
