| When I applied for an out of state deer license in Wyoming a couple
years back the confirmation didn't come until June or July I think.
For Elk they draw the permits in FeBruary and for deer in April.
Usually about a month after the deadline. Good Luck.................

| It also says on the Montana paperwork that they will draw the
permits on or around April 15th and applicants should know if they
got a permit before the end of April.
If you were going after a combination tag, then you'll probably get it.
I don't think they have ever sold out of combo licenses. Whitetail
only permits are a little harder to come by.

| Hot Dog!
I got my combo permit to Montana in the mail yesterday as did the
rest of the party. The Helsel/Willoghby/Cutler team is gonna be
chowing down on Elk and Venison next winter for sure!

p.s. I believe there are residual permits left. Contact Montana if
you are interested in acquiring licenses.

| Congrats! That should give you plenty to look forward to.
Next time you see Cutler tell him I said "hello" and ask him if he
wants to do another canoe trip down the St John's River with "Alice".

635.6 | St. John River of Maine? | SALEM::MACGREGOR | | Fri May 04 1990 11:01 | 6 |
| re. 4 Is taht the St. John River of Maine? I have canoed that river
twice and have had a great time on both occasions. We have been
dropped off at Baker Lake each time and I was impressed at the deer
sign around the lake. I have dreamed about going back there to hunt.
It just might be possible this year.

| Yes, it was the St. Johns River in Maine. We had a float plane drop
us off at 5th St. Johns Pond. I think that was the name of it. It
is quite a ways upstream from Baker Lake. I think it took us 2 or
three days to get to Baker.
It was kind of a strange trip. It was in May, but it had been
unusually dry. They guy with the plane should never have left us
in 5th St. Johns pond. The water level was very low and we ended up
wading and dragging the canoes for much of the first day or two. It
was funny - all the rocks in the river where red, green, orange, etc
from the canoes that had been drug over them.
It started raining a couple of hours after we got there and never
really stopped in the 6 days. The river really changed with all that
rain as we got downstream. By the last stretch, the river was really
swollen, probably 200 yards wide and the water was boiling with the
strong current. The Big rapids near the take out were washed out.
Even with the constant rain, it was a nice trip. It would have been
wonderful in better weather.
Yea, you can tell Debbie hello from me as well and ask her if she
has met "Alice".......

635.8 | St. John River is a great river | SALEM::MACGREGOR | | Mon Jun 25 1990 14:53 | 14 |
| Mark,
The first time we went down the St. John it rained for over a
week straight. At times the river was rising 2 feet a day. It was
emptying out at (I think) 25,000 cfm and was pretty wild. The last
time we did it it was 8,000 cfm. We are planning another trip next
year. A coupel of weeks ago in the N.H. Sunday News one of the outdoor
editors had done an article on it and their drop off point was the
5th St. John pond. Because of the amount of water the first time
it took us 3 days to make the trip, I think it is about 120-140
miles, not quite sure. the second time it took us 5 days but we
had not planned to rush it. I can't wait for 1991 now. Anyways I
did happen to notice an awful lot of deer activity near Baker Lake
and one of these days I will make a fall trip into the wilderness.
