634.0. "Got a couple of ???" by GUCCI::CBAUER (Why Me???) Fri Apr 06 1990 14:54

    Hi.
I'm a new noter and a beginner hunter. My husband is the expert
hunter. This is a great conference! I will admit however, that before
I met my husband I was one of those terrible people who thought
hunting was mean and that hunters just wanted to go blow away bambi
for no reason. I am proud to say that he enlightened me on the
sport of hunting and firearms. I went "hunting" with him on the
opening day of doe season last year to see what it was really like
out there (I only took a camera though). I must say that I did enjoy
myself. I always have enjoyed the outdoors i.e. fishing camping
etc.. I decided to take an interest in the sport because I realized
that if I ever wanted to see my husband during hunting season I
was going to have to take up the sport in some sense. (We've only
been married for 1 year on April 15, 1990). And we enjoy doing things
together and it gives us something we can discuss.

What I was wondering is...1. Are there any female hunters and/or
husband/wife type out there,I don't seem to meet up with any of them.
We live in Maryland (near Baltimore) and he usually hunts in western
Maryland). 2. We often discuss maybe one day going out west on
a big game hunt. I've heard this can be quite expensive. I thought
going for Moose would be fun. (I also heard that Moose makes for
    some great eatin'.

I suppose I've taken up enough space, Any replies???

	Christine,

Welcome to hunting and congrads on wanting to share your husband's
interests. My wife hunts antelope with me and has gotten one each of
the two times I've taken her. She has hunted deer and elk but does not
care for the cold we have that time of year. To give you an idea of
just license costs in Colo, non-res deer 120.00, elk 210.00, and
antelope 120.00. These are lasts years fees, I know they are going
up again. Your other expenses would be your food and gas to get here
and while hunting. Depending on how you prefer to camp will determine
that expense. Good luck to you.

	Gordon

    Welcome Christine,

I saw your note in the cooking notes file. Look under note
316 for some ideas on cooking game. I tried to send you mail directly
but couldn't connect to node GUCCI for some reason.

My only comment on cooking venison is not to over cook it. It dries
out too much (shoe leather, Yuck).

    Have fun,
    John

    Christine,

I've been hunting and fishing for years, now bring six-year-old twin
boys fishing with me. Welcome to the sport.

My husband used to fish more but he enjoys hunting the best. We go
together, but in the woods each go our own way; just inform the other
    where we'll be.

If we're fortunate enough to have our sons with us or one of the
daughters who likes sports we each have a companion to walk with. These
are precious times for us; whether we come away empty-handed or with
something to cook makes no difference.

You won't be sorry that you chose to find out the fun in doing what
he likes to do rather than stay home and wait.

634.6I know what ya mean...GUCCI::CBAUERWhy Me???Mon Apr 16 1990 11:4310
    Nancy -

You're right, staying at home is nooooooo fun at all. It's definatly
better than staying home and sulking and getting angry that he's
not home. Granted, sometimes I do stay home to get housework and
stuff done, somebody's got to do it :( Recently my husband is taking
up fishing as well, but hunting is his first love.

Thanks for the input. I'll be talking to ya.
