The show seemed to be a national airing of a neighbor hood
squabble. They talked about hunting deer with dogs in a county
down south. The accent was heavy, the "reports" of drinking were
plentiful. From the people that were shown on the T.V., I felt
little sypathy for any of them-either side.
Most of the show was the squabble between neighbors.
ABC looks like they will broadcast ANYTHING that is anti
hunting/gun.
Coming up-a one hour special on how a gun owner in
West Bumblast is a threat to the entire nation, because he hunted
squirrels once. See actual footage of him using his Assault Weapon
caliber(.22) semi-automatic rifle, equiped with the same kind of
powerful telescopic sights used by snipers and drug assasins, carelessly
shooting into the air with lethal projectiles that can kill over a mile
away! Do people NEED to shoot this animal-that is endangered in many
parts of this country? How can you even eat a squirrel?

| Re. -3
I tend to agree, as it seemed to be a localized
squabble between hunters and homeowners/landowners. Didn't really
care for the seqment on the landowner with the ATV who loaded
up the assault shotgun and other weaponry and went in search
of dogs.
It seems that T.V reporting has stopped to yet another
low in trying to fill broadcast time.
It would be nice to see T.V try to do a seqment on
the actual good points of animal harvesting. Although, at the
end, the male reporter ( forgot his name ) did disagree with
the female reporter who seemed to be appaled with hunting
overall. He did put in a few good points on it's behalf.

Yeah, One good point the reporter stated was:::::::::::
"Geez, I went along with 10 or so hunters and dogs for five straight
days, and you know what....those deer are not as defencless as i
thought, they did not take a deer the whole week.
And thats with dogs ! Wonder what he would of thougt stump-sitting
for hours here in the Nor'East.
Probably would of packed up and went back to New York City.

616.6 | Dogs and drinking during hunting .NEQ. hunting! | ODIXIE::RIDGWAY | Florida Native | Tue Mar 06 1990 09:44 | 13 |
| Just make sure that you don't judge all Southern hunters by what you
saw on 20/20. While it is true that using dogs is probably more common
here in the South than it is in the North, a great many people (myself
included) have never hunted with dogs and don't want to hunt with dogs.
To me still hunting will always be the best, using dogs tends to weigh
the odds too much in favor of the hunter.
Those people that were interviewed were Mississippi rednecks IF they
drink while hunting, IF they fire from the road, IF they are unsure of
their targets and backdrops, but there are rednecks in all 50 states
and these people are NOT hunters.

| Noooooo; Pigs like that are STUPID...The people shown are the exact
reasons why there is such an anti hunting uprise..(tooting my horn) I'm
a certified Senior Hunter Education Instructor in Colorado; and
throughout the years I have lost more private property(for hunting)
because of people who ABUSE the their privilages. And What I saw on
the boob tube really turned a gut muscle. They actually called that
hunting---What a BOGUS joke...! We as responsible hunters, must abide
by all rules and regulations, or before we know it, there will be no
more hunting. I just wish CBS or whom ever would film me, I spent 7
days Elk hunting, working my butt off only to bring home TRACK SOUP!
No Dogs, No ROADHUNTING, just alot of walking and tracking--to no
avail. I better get off of my bandstand, there are some many things I
would like to say, but as a responsible hunter you've probably heard
of bitched about the same things..

616.10 | What if... | EUCLID::PETERSON | GOVERNMENT is a VERB! | Wed Mar 07 1990 15:19 | 23 |
|
Now, let me get this straight,
If I spend weeks planning, saving, scouting, and collecting
equipment before a hunt, ABC will investigate the "Fairness in hunting"
If I wander out into a feild and take game, I am a "Dangerous
random hunter"
If I don't shave for a week I am a "Typical deer hunter"
Face it, without some very good ideas, and someone REAL popular to
push them, ALL firearms activities will continue to attacked in the
media.

| Just to get things straight, the term redneck doesn't deserve
to be used in the context of a few back. The term refers to people who
work outdoors in the sun, hence red necks. These people are a large
group. They are farmers, ranchers, cowboys, oil workers, and many
others.
Like all generalizations, they don't hold up. I know a lot of
cowboys and ranchers that are highly intelligent and true
conservationists. Most have a good education, and many have college
degrees. They work at they're jobs because they love it. They don't
deserve the bad connotations that are implied here. I'm a part time
red neck and am proud of it. If I ever leave DEC, and have a choice,
I'll be a full time redneck. The vast majority of the rednecks that
I know are fine people.
Please avoid these tags. There are so-called hunters that do the
things described here, but I'd bet that they don't all fall into the
redneck catagory, and many probably don't. In any case, they aren't
representative of all or even a majority of the rednecks.

616.12 | and I still say that sucker's ears are ringing! | DECWET::HELSEL | Legitimate sporting purpose | Thu Mar 08 1990 16:39 | 25 |
| All right, George!
I heard that.
;-)
/brett
p.s. I think that criticizing the hunters that disobey laws, and display
a general lack of disrepect, in this file is preaching to the choir.
Also, I try not to criticize another man's technique. Some people feel
that hunting birds with dogs is un-sportsmanlike. Others don't like
hunters that bait bears.
There's two issues at stake here:
1) Respect for other people (other hunters and non-hunters)
2) Hunting methods.

616.13 | How 'bout "ignorant scum" instead of "redneck"? | ODIXIE::RIDGWAY | Florida Native | Thu Mar 08 1990 16:39 | 18 |
| George,
The term redneck was not meant to demean or belittle those people who
work the land for their living. I have nothing but respect for those
people who choose to make their living outdoors.
Since the segment was focused on southern hunters, I chose to use the
most common meaning of redneck. While I don't know all the meanings of
the word "redneck" across the country, I do know that here in Alabama
the term is not particulary complimentary, therefore my use of the
word.
These people were not hunters. I don't think anyone here will argue
with me on that point.
Sorry if you were offended.

616.15 | Ho offense taken | SSDEVO::BOURBEAU | | Thu Mar 08 1990 17:21 | 11 |
| Keith, I wasn't offended, just wanted to point out that the term
has developed a bad connotation, but that it applied equally well to
many people that I'm sure you didn't have in mind in you entry.
I guess that I'm a little touchy also, because I've heard many of
my friends sort of lumped into a great faceless mass that many people
classify as ignorant bumpkins, if you will, and they clearly don't
fit the description. Generalizations, as we hunters should know, are
seldom fair; note the media developed concept of HUNTER.

616.16 | The Original Rednecks | MILPND::HOOVER | | Fri Mar 09 1990 14:42 | 14 |
| Seen a program on the boob tube about rednecks... Seems the originals
were coal miners in West Virgina who thought they were being screwed
by the company owned by some fat cats in England. They went on
strike and lost.... mainly cause the company threw them out of their
houses which of course the company owned. So they formed their own
army and proceeded to go to war with the company. Since they didn't
have any uniforms (to tell the good guys from the bad guys) they agreed
to wear red bandannas or hanker-chiefs around their neck. Hence the
term "rednecks". Federal troops were called in and this sort of
dampened their fighting spirits...at least for the time being.
