603.0. "Wet Whitetail Hunter" by LUDWIG::STEVENS (Bear It All) Fri Feb 02 1990 01:37

Has anyone taken a float trip for Deer??? In Maine where
Jim and I go there is a real wide river.. This river has an island
that i "know" has deer on it... We keep saying that we are gonna
bring a canoe but just never do it... Have any of you
     had any luck doing this???

I read a super article on this in "Whitetail Hunting"...
It had some good pointers and a few i'll be trying next fall...
Also had a great article on wading for the "Wet Whitetail"

         Any Comments...........

    >wading for the wet Whitetail

    	Jeff,

I used to do that before I got married....

All kidding aside, does this refer to rivers/streams
or swamp trolling ? The Buckmasters magazine had an article
2 - 3 months ago on using canoe's to access spots that see very
little hunting pressure. It was interesting, and got me thinking
    	on that line.

Now......Where's that Island you mentioned ?

      Jeff,

Where is that island you were talking about??? I took a canoe
trip down the Allegash Wilderness Waterway a few years back, and
at the entrance to one of the many small lakes in that area was
an island that had several deer on it. Can't remember the name of
the island, but it was the the next lake north of Chamberlain (sp).
Might have been Eagle (?) Lake. I was a fairly small island, and
I don't think the hunting would be real challanging. We could see
deer all day from the campsite. I think that a lot of the challange
of a trip like that would be getting the animal out after by canoe.
We also saw several moose (16 in 7 days), including several nice
bulls. Now that would a challange. Getting a 1000lb moose out of
    there in a canoe.

603.3Wet Whitetail's..My wife would kill me.DNEAST::STEVENS_JIMFri Feb 02 1990 09:4514
The Island is really a penninsula ( I know, I was on it last season..)
and is located just outside of Athens.

The River goes from 6 feet to about 30 feet in width. We'vee seen
deer tracks crossing in several places. One BIG buck had just
crossed the river and was standing in the road a few years ago.
The owner of the camp happened to go driving by WITHOUT a gun.
In the middle of the day on Saturday !!!! Butch said it was HUGE...

Jeff, Rick and I are going to float down the river fishing this spring.
We'll have a better idea what we're up against this fall...

603.4Allagash Hunting?SALEM::MACGREGORFri Feb 02 1990 11:065
Regarding an earlier reply to this note, I have been considering
a whitetail hunt in the Allagash, they do allow hunting there don't
they? What are the season dates? Any certain regulations that I
    should know about?

603.6Allagash is Alaska in the N.E.WJOUSM::PAPPALARDOMon Feb 05 1990 11:2441

    Bret,

Hunting is allowed in the Allagash.

The season Dates are the standard Maine Deer Seasons.

Before you are allowed into the Allagash you must bring xtra GAS, and 2
spare tires. As you enter the Allagash you will be checked at one or
two checking stations that are owned and operated by the paper
companys. A very small fee will be assesed per man/women.
They will count how may people are going in and again when you exit.
They will ask you your home address, # of days Staying, And where.
The only thing they ask is not to cut standing trees for wood but
anything along the roads that are on the ground your welcome to.
You can not hunt where logging operations are being held, but there
is so much land you won't be hindered from where you want to hunt.
I hunted there and never saw another human in 8 days.

One 9pt was taken dressed out at 260 something, and a Doe that dressed
out at 180. There are BIG deer up there but far and few between,
chances of a bear are greater than normal as with coyotes, also bring
the shotgun as you will limit out within an hour for partridge
everyday. I suggest you go the very last week of the season as the
Bucks are in full rut, but the waether will be most difficult.
Another thig to remember is the logging trucks have the right of way
even if you have to back down the road 2 miles or where ever you can
pull of the trucks can get by. Other than that You are in the Alaska
of the Northeast and your on your own. So everything you learned about
safty and thinking twice before you make a decision applies.
Oh yes, Almost forgot you will run into moose or they into you other
    than that good luck!

I will return someday, The thing you have to remember is your hunting
Trophys, And Trophy Whitetail hunting is most difficult to connect.
I would go for two weeks.

    See Ya,

    Rick

603.7Allagash and St. JohnSALEM::MACGREGORTue Feb 06 1990 08:5416
I have canoed the St. John River twice from Baker Lake to St. Francis
and have come across alot of moose. We have seen alot of Bear also
as close as 40 yards, this being in the spring of course. I was
standing on the bridge on the outlet side of Baker Lake when a big
Bear (my guess is he weighed at least 400 lbs.) walked in front
of me about 40 yards away. All he did was lift up one front leg
and look at me then continue on his way. He didn't even run. Just
walked. I have only seen a couple of deer in those woods but I came
across a heck of a lot of tracks and I was impressed not only by
the amount but but some of the size of them. We are planning another
canoe trip sometime in 1991, but someday I hope to get back there
for deer hunting and maybe for Bear. I would also like to get to
hunt near Chamberlain and Eagle Lakes. Maybe this year. Someone
had also told me they had seen alot of deer near Spider Lake also.

603.8I'm Wet.. (-:LUDWIG::STEVENSBear It AllFri Feb 09 1990 03:2718

In the Article i mentioned it had pictures of a guy with chest
high waders walking through a swamp... He was eyeing a big buck..

If you think about this way of hunting it makes you realize it's
true that deer will do anything to elude ya...
"""Remember the buck last year Jim???""" This buck walked across
a beaver pond that was all ice... No snow on it... We thought we
had it cornered in a mash area and he walks across the ice,,, I
tracked that bastard for about 2 miles and never caught him...

Now i know why it's such a thrill to bag one... They are one
    of smartest animals out there...

That Island in Athens will be mine all season next year...
